Ace cinematographer UK Senthil Kumar wouldnt have imagined that his name would be etched in the electoral campaign of the countrys current Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The cameraman, who worked with the then PM-designate Modi, during the 2014 electoral campaign by creating holographic videos that were projected to the public across the country, has found his name mentioned in a book that revolves around the campaign. Its not every day one gets to work with the Prime Minister of the country. He was extremely co-operative during the making of the holographic videos and we spent around 4-5 hours every day for two months. He used to call me Hippie because of my long and unruly hair. It was an experience that I would never forget, says the excited cinematographer, who was in the city recently for an interaction session with the students of Dr GRD College of Science. Senthil Kumar is the only cinematographer from Asia to have been trained in the technology from London.
Elaborating on holographic technology, Senthil Kumar says, Its a major hit among politicians. The current Telengana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu also made use of the technology during their electoral campaigns last year. The technology can come in handy for politicians who are unwell, but still want to reach out to the public. The technology can help politicians be omnipresent, especially during electoral campaigns. However, the technology has found takers among cricket and films as well. In fact, there were plans for projecting holographic videos of Bollywood stars Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan dancing for the audience during the inaugural function of a cricket tournament last year. It is catching up in a big way.
When quizzed who the cinematographer personally would like to capture on hologram, pat comes the reply. I would like to shoot Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan. He is a man of immense caliber and it would be a pleasure to work with him. Among the departed souls, I would love to capture the late president APJ Abdul Kalam among many others. Senthil Kumar is now in talks for a tourism campaign by the government.
