Tamil superstar Suriya is gearing up for the release of his upcoming movie ‘Karuppu’ directed by
RJ Balaji, co-starring with
Trisha Krishnan. Ever since the teaser came out, one particular scene has become the talking point among fans. In the teaser, Suriya is seen eating a watermelon and waving people away from him. The moment instantly reminded many fans of his famous scene from ‘Ghajini’.
RJ Balaji explains why he recreated the viral scene
As per a report by Cinema Express, RJ Balaji recently opened up about why he decided to include the watermelon scene in ‘Karuppu’. He said many young people and Gen-Z audiences do not know that Suriya was the original person who did that scene style first.
RJ Balaji said, “Many young people, including Gen-Z aren't aware who was the original person to pull it off.”
‘Watermelon Star’ reference
He also spoke about how content creator T Diwagar made a parody version of the same scene and became famous online as the “Watermelon Star.”
RJ Balaji added, “Suddenly, during an interview, someone told me, ‘You even made Suriya sir do that!’ I was shocked because he was actually the first person to do it.”
The director also shared that he was confused at one point about keeping the scene in the film. He worried that audiences might misunderstand it. But later, he decided to recreate the moment in a fresh and fun way instead of copying the old version completely. He said, “I want Suriya sir to act, dance, sing, and deliver punch dialogues, but not in a predictable manner.”
