Madras High Court dismisses Tamil Film Producers Council case; Election to be held on February 22 - Reports
The Madras High Court dismissed a case filed to stop the Tamil Film Producers Council election. Some council members claimed the election announcement violated the council’s rules. With this decision, the coming election for the 2026–2029 term will proceed without any barriers. This ruling provides the necessary guidance for the council to proceed with and implement the planned agenda.
As per The Hindu, the current council administrators’ term ends in May 2025. The new election for the 2026–2029 term is scheduled for February 22. Former judge S. Rajeswaran has been appointed as the election officer. His selection should guarantee the election process takes place within lawful and administrative norms. The authorities reiterated that all procedures and rules are observed to the letter in the consultative process for the elections.
The members who filed the case argued that the election announcement did not follow council rules. They also claimed that candidates were given only four days to submit their nominations. However, the council argued that the election notification was issued according to the rules. The candidates attended general meetings and had an opportunity to raise concerns, but made no objections at that time. It was also noted that four of the five members who filed the case had submitted nominations for the election themselves.
The council highlighted that former judge S. Rajeswaran, who had conducted previous council elections, was appointed again as the election officer. This is important for making the process fair. The High Court's decision allows the council's election to proceed unimpeded and thus increases trust in the government. It shall therefore build trust in making the right judicial decisions during elections.Get the latest entertainment updates from the Times of India, along with the latest Hindi movies, upcoming Hindi movies in 2026 , and Telugu movies.”
