Popular filmmaker Nishikant Kamat, who has directed several hit films, including the Madhavan-Sangeetha-starrer Evano Oruvan in Tamil, passed away today. He was admitted to a hospital in Hyderabad on July 31 with complaints of fever and excessive fatigue.
A source says, “According a press statement from the hospital, he was suffering from liver cirrhosis for the past two years.

Despite showing improvements initially, his condition deteriorated with liver dysfunction and drowsiness, and he was shifted to the ICU. Since yesterday, he developed respiratory failure and hypotension. He suffered multiple organ failure and this afternoon, his vital parametres started declining. At 4.24pm, he succumbed to his illness.”
Condolences have been pouring in from all quarters, and among those who expressed grief was Arun Vaidyanathan. The director took to social media page to write, “Had the pleasure of meeting Nishikant Kamat in New York - Very saddened to know he passed away at this Young age. He has directed amazing films - Dombivali Fast, Evano oruvan in Tamil and Latest, Drishyam in Hindi. Too young....Very sad. Om Shanthi (sic).”
Nishikant debuted as a director with the Marathi film Dombivali Fast, which he remade in Tamil as Evano Oruvan with Madhavan. The movie was widely appreciated by audience and critics. Though Nishikant didn’t make any more movies in Tamil post that, he went on to direct several Hindi films, including Force (remake of Suriya-Gautham Menon film Kaakha Kaakha, with John Abraham, Genelia and Vidyut Jammwal in the lead), Drishyam (Ajay Devgn-Shriya Saran-Tabu-starrer), Rocky Handsome (starring John Abraham and Shruti Haasan) and Madaari (with Irrfan). He has also acted in several Hindi films and was working on another directorial, Darbadar, which was slotted for a 2022 release.
