Rajinikanth’s '2.O' to Simbu’s 'Maanaadu': Five movies that skipped the Diwali release

The release date of a film is often decided once the makers head to the final stages. Although they do their best to deliver the film on the promised dates, there are occasions where they have to prepone or postpone the release. As Diwali is one of the biggest festivals in India, filmmakers often eye to release their films on the festivity. Simbu’s ‘Maanaadu’ too was slated to hit the silver screens this Diwali, however, the team had pushed it to November. Well, we know that cinephiles are disappointed, but this is not the first time a big-ticket release has been postponed. Let’s take a look at times when Tamil filmmakers skipped the Diwali release.

'2.O'

Rajinikanth's '2.O' took more production time than expected. The science-fiction drama was originally planned to release for Diwali 2017, and few posters with the release date were announced. But the delay in the post-production made the makers postpone the release, and the film later released a year later in November 2018.

'I'

Vikram's action thriller 'I', which was directed by Shankar, was first planned to release for Diwali 2014, and the actor was supposed to clash with Vijay's 'Kaththi' at the box office. But the clash of two friends was avoided, and 'I' was pushed back to Pongal 2015, however, the action-drama received good responses and the film grossed good numbers at the box office.

'NGK'

Suriya joined hands with Selvaraghavan for the first time for the political thriller 'NGK', and the highly-anticipated film was planned to be released for Diwali 2018. But the delay in production had made the makers postpone the film to May 2019. Fans, who expected Vijay-Suriya clash at the box office, were disappointed, and it didn't happen thereafter.

'Valimai'

Ajith's 'Valimai' is one of the highly anticipated films, and the expectations have been mounting high right from the film announcement. But the pandemic spread has delayed the film's process, and they didn't come for Diwali 2020 as the film was uncompleted. Now, the film is scheduled to hit the big screens for Pongal 2022.

'Maanaadu'

Silambarasan has teamed up with Venkat Prabhu for the political thriller 'Maanaadu', and the film was announced to clash with Rajinikanth's 'Annaatthe' and Vishal's 'Enemy' this Diwali. But the makers have stepped out from the release considering the film's business, as three biggies releasing at the same time during this pandemic period might affect the business.
