‘Retro’ box office collections day 6: Suriya’s film mints Rs 48.90 crores despite mixed reviews
Suriya’s latest film ‘Retro’, directed by Karthik Subbaraj, has managed to maintain a steady hold at the box office, raking in Rs 48.90 crore in just six days despite receiving lukewarm reviews from audiences and critics alike.
Retro Movie Review
Strong opening
According to the Sacnilk website, the action-packed period drama opened strong with Rs 19.25 crore on its first day, powered by massive turnout in Tamil Nadu and decent reception in Telugu-speaking regions.
Day wise collections
While 'Retro' saw a sharp 59.74% dip on Day 2, collecting Rs 7.75 crore, the weekend helped the film bounce back slightly. Day 3 and Day 4 brought in Rs 8 crore and Rs 8.15 crore, respectively. However, the film’s momentum slowed again during the weekdays, with Monday collections dropping to Rs 3.4 crore and Tuesday (Day 6) declining further to Rs 2.35 crore.
The total domestic India net collection now stands at ₹48.90 crore. The Tamil version continues to dominate with the highest contribution across all six days. On Tuesday, the Tamil version witnessed an average occupancy of 18.43%, with the highest footfalls seen during the afternoon and night shows. The Telugu version had a lower overall occupancy of 12.17%.
Despite the drop in collections post the opening weekend, Retro is performing respectably, considering the mixed word-of-mouth. Its performance will depend heavily on how it holds up over the second weekend, particularly with upcoming releases.
ETimes verdict
With Suriya’s star power and Karthik Subbaraj’s stylish direction, ‘Retro’ continues to draw in fans, even as it faces competition and critical skepticism. ETimes review for the film read, “A 15-minute single-shot sequence that involves song and dance, heated conversation and tense action just makes one want to stand up and applaud. Similarly, an action scene in a bioluminescent sea makes for striking visuals (Shreyaas Krishna is the cinematographer). Then there's Suriya, whose very presence lights up the frames. The actor's performance, too, feels more organic when compared to some of his recent works where there was a certain artifice creeping into the acting. Then, there's Santhosh Narayanan, who delivers foot-tapping numbers and a rousing background score that elevates even the weaker moments.”
