‘Retro’ box office collections day 7: Suriya’s film mints more than Rs 50 crores

Despite mixed reviews and modest audience expectations, ‘Retro’, starring Suriya and directed by Karthik Subbaraj, has managed to hold steady at the box office, crossing the Rs 50 crore mark in just seven days.

Crosses Rs 50 crores

The action drama, which marks the first collaboration between the actor-director duo, earned an estimated Rs 1.75 crore on its seventh day (Wednesday), bringing the total India net collection to Rs 50.80 crore across all languages, according to the Sacnilk website’s early estimates.

A magnificent opening, but did it sustain?

The film had a powerful start on its opening day with Rs 19.25 crore, driven largely by Tamil Nadu audiences. However, the collections dropped significantly on day two (Rs 7.75 crore), before stabilizing slightly over the weekend with Rs 8 crore on Saturday and Rs 8.15 crore on Sunday. The weekday trend shows a typical dip with Rs 3.4 crore on Monday, Rs 2.5 crore on Tuesday, and finally Rs 1.75 crore on Wednesday.



Decent occupancy rates

On Day 7, ‘Retro’ registered an overall Tamil occupancy of 15.68%. Chennai led with 22.75% occupancy across 420 shows, while Madurai followed with 18%, and Bengaluru trailed at 8%. Telugu regions saw lower numbers, with a total occupancy of 10.55%, indicating a more lukewarm reception in the Andhra-Telangana belt.

While the film hasn't reached blockbuster status, it has managed to sustain decent footfalls, thanks to Suriya’s star power and the stylish direction of Karthik Subbaraj

Our review for the Suriya starrer reads, “Then there's Suriya, whose very presence lights up the frames. The actor's performance, too, feels more organic when compared to some of his recent works where there was a certain artifice creeping into the acting. Then, there's Santhosh Narayanan, who delivers foot-tapping numbers and a rousing background score that elevates even the weaker moments. If only had the writing been more focused in the latter portions, Retro could have escaped the curse of the second half, and turned into something truly memorable.”
