Singer Suchitra publicly apologises to ex-husband Karthik Kumar for her 'gay' remarks
Playback singer Suchitra has publicly apologized to her ex-husband, Karthik Kumar, for previously labelling him as gay. Suchitra took to her YouTube channel and posted a video following persistent calls from the Chennai police.
On August 14, Suchitra also disclosed that she plans to send the apology via email to her ex-partner, actor-comedian as well. Suchitra explained that she felt compelled to co-operate with the police, who had shown interest in possibly taking control of her YouTube channel. She revealed that Karthik had filed a complaint with the Pattinampakkam police station after she made the gay remarks in interviews. His complaint requested a public apology, which should also be sent to him by email.
The singer added that she had been receiving calls from the police for the past few weeks, which she interpreted as increasingly threatening. Officer Vijayalakshmi informed her that the case was being pursued thoroughly, warning that if she failed to apologize, she could face imprisonment. To avoid further issues, Suchitra decided to issue the public apology.
In her statement, Suchitra expressed regret for her comments, acknowledging that they had been blamed for harming Karthik Kumar’s career. She clarified that she never intended to damage his reputation, describing him as a respectable man, and hoped her apology might help his career. She said, 'I am sorry that I called you gay. I don't want to ruin his career. In fact, Karthik Kumar is a good man.'
Reflecting on the backlash Kumar has faced, Suchitra questioned whether her remarks had truly affected his career, suggesting he might be paying her too much attention. She advised him to focus on his life and second marriage.
The controversy dates back to May 2024, when Suchitra gave interviews to two YouTube channels, making the claim about Karthik Kumar. She also made allegations against other celebrities, including Dhanush, Trisha, Vijay, Kamal Haasan, Andrea Jeremiah, and Aishwarya Rajinikanth. In response, Karthik Kumar issued a legal notice to Suchitra, demanding she stop discussing him and retract her statements. Similar notices were sent to the YouTube channels involved, requesting the videos be removed.
The couple tied the knot in 2005 and separated in 2018.
