However, problems started just before release. The Central Board of Film Certification did not give the censor certificate on time. Because of this, the release had to be stopped. The producers approached the Madras High Court, where a single judge directed the CBFC to immediately grant clearance. Soon after, this order was stayed by a division bench of the High Court.
The producers then moved the Supreme Court, hoping for quick relief. Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi argued the case and said that a film is a “perishable item” and delay would cause “serious injury” to the makers. The Supreme Court, however, refused to entertain the plea at this stage. A bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and Augustine George Masih asked the producers to approach the division bench of the Madras High Court instead.
The Supreme Court also asked the High Court to decide the matter on January 20. With this, the fate of Jana Nayagan remains uncertain for now. The delay has disappointed fans, especially because of the film’s political theme and Vijay’s current political journey.
At present, the film is caught between court orders and censor clearance. Everyone is waiting for the next hearing, hoping the issue will be resolved soon and the film will finally reach theatres.
