After making his debut with the comedy thriller Adhagappattathu Magajanangalay,
Umapathy
has begun shooting for his next. And this time around, he will be acting under the direction of his father, National Award-winning actor and director,
Thambi Ramaiah. What’s interesting is that
Ramaiah
will also be acting in the film — as his son Umapathy’s father.
“The film’s titled
Ulagam Vilaikku Varudhu
and the shoot is already underway in Malai Kovil in Pudukottai district. We’ve filmed a song, choreographed by Dinesh master. Mridula Murali will be playing the female lead in the film,” says Thambi Ramaiah, adding, “I wanted to direct a film that can showcase my son’s acting prowess. That’s why I didn’t take up any acting assignments in the interim. I’m sure this film will do justice to his talent and also help me explore the field.”
Prod him about the film and he says, “The story deals with a vazhndu ketta kudumbam — a father who’s not interested in running the family and a son who is too lazy to work. How a girl comes into their lives and motivates them forms the crux of the film. The treatment will be in the style of a slapstick comedy. Kamal Haasan got inspired by his brief appearance in a role similar to Charlie Chaplin in Punnagai Mannan and developed that into a full-fledged character in Apoorva Sagodharargal. Similarly, my role will have shades of my character in Thani Oruvan.”
Ask him if he’s a doting dad or a strict director on the set and he says with a laugh, “It’s exciting to play my son’s father in the film, though we are thorough professionals while shooting.”
