Throwback Thursday: When Mani Ratnam revealed how Kamal Haasan sparked the idea of ‘Thug Life’
Long before the buzz and brilliance of ‘Thug Life’ began dominating headlines, its seeds were sown in a moment of cinematic serendipity—rooted in none other than Kamal Haasan’s iconic presence. In a heartfelt throwback shared during the film’s first media gathering in Mumbai, veteran filmmaker Mani Ratnam traced the genesis of ‘Thug Life’ back to one pivotal name: Kamal Haasan.
“The first thing that came was Kamal Haasan, and then ‘Thug Life’ came in. So, it started from there,” Ratnam candidly revealed to IANS, making it clear that the legendary actor wasn’t just cast in the lead—he was the very inspiration for the film’s concept.
The media event marked a reunion of cinematic legends as Ratnam, Haasan, and musical maestro A.R. Rahman took center stage, joined by stars Silambarasan TR, Trisha Krishnan, Abhirami, and Ashok Selvan. The air was thick with nostalgia as Kamal recalled his early days with Ratnam—not as co-creators, but as neighbors and film buffs. “I knew him as a friend from the same area. We spoke only cinema—no gossip. That’s how it all began,” Kamal said, reflecting on a time when their passion for films was all that mattered.
Ratnam, speaking about the film’s scale, credited the story for its grandeur and praised the dream team assembled for bringing it alive. Kamal, who also plays a key role as actor, writer, and producer, humbly added, “The most exciting part was working with him (Mani Ratnam). Everything else just followed.”
Meanwhile, Rahman opened up about the sonic soul of ‘Thug Life’, particularly the haunting vocal elements in the trailer’s background score—sung in an unfamiliar language—that added a unique and haunting depth to the musical narrative.
This rare throwback not only celebrates the making of ‘Thug Life’ but also gives fans a glimpse into the long-standing camaraderie and mutual respect that fuelled this powerful collaboration. From friends with a shared love for cinema to collaborators shaping one of the most anticipated films of the year—Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam’s journey is nothing short of legendary.
