Plot: A military pilot recalls a romance with a doctor while being held prisoner.

Kaatru Veliyidai First ReportWhat works:

- Mani Ratnam’s direction, which gives even routine scenes freshness; he is still the best when it comes to staging a romantic scene. A great example is the scene between Karthi and Aditi at a base camp in Leh.

- There is chemistry between Karthi and Aditi; his inherent manliness and her sweetness go together very well

- Ravi Varman's gorgeous visuals that make us feel we are in Kashmir

- Rahman’s songs, which are peppy

What doesn't work:
- The narrative device of a prisoner of war trying to escape and get back to his lady love feels clichéd

- The conflict in the story isn't gripping enough

- The leisurely pacing might not work for everyone
Kaatru Veliyidai Movie Review: What lets down Kaatru Veliyidai and stops it from being the film it wants to be is the narrative device that Mani Ratnam employs to tell his story — intercutting a romance with a sub-plot about the protagonist, who has become a prisoner of war in the present, trying to stage a prison break and get back to his lady love. It not only feels clichéd, but there is hardly any suspense in these portions; worse, they are preposterous and laughable, almost comparable with what we got in Wagah last year. Katru Veliyidai  - An introspective review of an epic story teller An amazing epic director, a maestro musician, a ravi varman mind blowing cinematography, an amazing Kargil backdrop and a very sensible essence that needs to be narrated but what went wrong. What got me distracted and made the movie miserably fail is a big question mark the audience don’t even want to introspect. Due to my love for the epic director. Let me….In my personal view, the right ingredients were there in the movie, but few things dint click and here is the top three in my list:Zero Chemistry - There was zero chemistry between the Karthik and Aditi and the screenplay also lacked to build it upfront. The church scene in OK Kanmani where phone numbers were exchanged, the train scene between maddy and shalni or the red sweater scene in roja are examples of how the director got the chemistry ignited. This movie completely missed it. At a point of time, you feel that Aditi can better leave Karthik than tagging with his arrogant behaviourUnderutilised or misfit Supporting Roles – Karthik and Aditi were the only main characters and when they dint captivate you, the movie collapsed since there were none others to keep the movie going. A Prakash raj character in OK Kanmani, or a Nazer in Roja, or a Mamutti in Thalapathi carried equal weight on their shoulders to strengthen the storyline. Here, the supporting actors were underutilised and many of the characters were a misfit.  I am still not able to get over the mother character, why was she so lost and why on earth do you want to introduce a pregnant women before 4 hours of delivery time into a wedding and a dancing scene as the bride – this is where the movie completely lost meA confused Hero - Let’s give it to him, Karthik did managed to transform into the "chocolate boy" character from his earlier "boy next door" image of Madras. But could not last well when he needed to show his arrogance blended romantic hero style… too many effects which confused him as well as me...The same gaps were in Kadal – Zero chemistry and disgusting use of the supporting characters… guess my favourite director did not learn his lesson. Overall, a Kargil backdrop to start off with, where you comfortably get ready to feast on a three course wedding meal and what is served on the leaf is two idli’s with chutney…. hah… Not satisfied … but my love for the epic director continues....
