I worked out four hours a day to get ripped for Vinaya Vidheya Rama: Charan
With bulging biceps, six-pack abs, ripped back and a tattooed chest, Ram Charan has transformed into a lean, mean fighting machine in the trailer of his upcoming film, Vinaya Vidheya Rama (VVR). Considering his last outing on the silverscreen, Rangasthalam, saw him play a hearing impaired village boy, this sudden transformation looks all the more striking. “It was a lot of hard work,” admits Charan, adding, “In Rangasthalam, I was very lean with nearly zero muscle. So, to regain that in a couple of months wasn’t easy. What would have taken at least six months had to be accomplished in two months. But the brief was clear, so I just had to get working and make it happen.” The first month of the workout regimen saw Charan following an intensive intermittent fasting routine. “For the first 12 hours of the day, I would eat small meals every three hours. My diet comprised a lot of clean,
vegetables. The next 12 hours would be just a water diet; ie if I got hungry, I’d only sip on water,” Charan reveals.
Once the diet plan was set and the body was prepped, came the real deal — hitting the gym with a vengeance. “I used to workout for three to four hours every single day. My day began with 50 minutes of cardio before I left for shoot. In the evening, it was another 30 minutes of cardio followed by an hour-and-a-half of strength and heavy weight training with specific exercises for abs, glutes, inner thighs, back, chest, triceps and calves through the week. I drank lots of water and kept the diet clean and lean.” Admittedly, it was a stressful regime, but now that it has paid off, Charan is mighty pleased. “I need to thank director Boyapati Srinu for pushing my limits and inspiring me to get the look of my character right. I play an angry young man who must rise to the occasion and protect his family. I must say, the action sequences in the film were very demanding, but my body was well prepared to handle it. Shooting in Azerbaijan in temperatures of 3 to 7 degrees Celsius, going shirtless with mud all over you — it was all very challenging. I need more directors and films like these to motivate me to stay this way,” he says, signing off.
