6 Indian films that portrayed Lord Shiva in an unpleasant way

India is a land of several belief systems and spiritual processes that has given birth to many religions as well. Irrespective of being educated, people here are very sentimental when it comes to god. As the nation celebrated Maha Shivaratri’ on March 1, ETimes dug into films in which the makers have either made fun of the character of Lord Shiva or showed him in an unpleasant way which had somewhere hurt the sentiments of the audience. Check the list below.

​'PK' (2014) – Hindi Movie

There was one objectionable scene in the film where a man dressed as the Hindu deity, Lord Shiva, pulls the rickshaw with two burqa-clad women as passengers. Also, a few other scenes show Aamir Khan’s character running behind Lord Shiva which leads to controversy at that time. An FIR was reportedly lodged against the makers of the film for hurting the religious sentiments of Hindus in October 2013. A case was also lodged against Aamir Khan and its director Rajkumar Hirani under section 295A in Rajasthan.

​'Brahmachari' (1992) – Tamil Movie

Tamil actor aka Universal Star Kamal Haasan was enacted as Lord Shiva in his 1992 film ‘Brahmachari’. Though he didn’t project the lord shiva in bad light made the divine character a comic. Kamal Haasan is reported to be an atheist who showed his religious views in most of his movies. The talented actor has used Lord Shiva’s character to create comedy in his film. However, he is a Top actor in Tamil Nadu and a born Hindu Brahmin not much controversy had attracted the movie.

​'Maga Rayudu' (1994) - Telugu Movie

Late actor Mallikarjuna Rao portrays the character of Lord Shiva in the 1994 comedy movie titled ‘Maga Rayudu’ story written jointly by Ramani, & Mallik, whereas Posani Krishna Murali penned the dialogues that were directed by EVV Satyanarayana and Produced by Mullapudi Rambabu.

The film has shown Lordshiva as an updated version of Shiva who uses a Time machine to travel from one time to another and from planet to planet instead of Nandi, also he speaks foul language in English, whereas his assistants carry machine guns.

​'Rutra Thandavam' (1978) - Tamil Movie

In a thought-provoking satirical movie on Man by God in 1978 Tamil movie ‘Rutra Thandavam’. Actors Nagesh and VK Ramsamy make lots of hilarious exchanges of words, where Lord shiva utters lots of punch dialogues and cracks practical jokes with his poor priest (actor Nagesh) as well as to the common man. The film directed by K.Vijayan talked about the dreams of a poor priest and how his god Shiva educates him with practicalities. Later police also arrest Lord Shiva and take him to the police station.

​'Aapadbandhavudu' (1992)– Telugu Movie

Megastar Chiranjeevi starrer 1992 film ‘Aapadbandhavudu’ shows Chiranjeevi as an actor who loves to don Lord Shiva & goes on a bike with the divine attire, whereas his character after the performance makes fun of another aspiring artist for trying to don the role in his place and warns him not to think of it ever again but try elsewhere…!

‘Eradanesala’ (2017)– Kannada Movie

In the 2017 Kannada movie ‘Eradanesala’ Lord Shiva was shown going with his complete family to take away the life of a commoner (actor Avinash) instead of Lord Yama and there are few comical dialogues between the actor and Lord Shiva over his arrival. Though Lord Shiva's character was not shown in a bad light or made fun of, he is used to making comedy in the film who also speaks English and does other tantrums.
