As Parthiepan’s highly acclaimed directional film ‘Oththa Seruppu Size 7’ becomes the first Tamil movie to be remade in Indonesia. Fans were happy to know that South Indian cinema too is going global. But did you this film is not the first film that was remade in any international languages but there are several that reached the global audience. let's see the list of South Indian films that were remade in other foreign and international languages.

Anuraga Aralithu (1986) - Kannada

Anuraga Aralithu is a 1986 Kannada language film directed by MS. Rajasekhar based on a Kannada novel titled ‘Anuragada Anthahpura’ written by H.G.Radhadevi. The film is produced by M.S.Puttaswamy that starred Rajkumar, Madhavi and Geetha. The film’s success has made the film remade in several Indian languages besides re-making in Bangladeshi Bangla in 2002 as ‘Shami Stirir Juddho’. Still, few other south movies were remade in Bangladeshi Bangla due to their popularity there.

​Abhay/Alavandhan - 2001- (Tamil)

‘Abhay’ is an Indian psychological thriller directed by Suresh Krissna based on the novel Dhayam written by Kamal Haasan in 1984. The film stars Kamal in dual roles that have the elements of magic realism in the film. The film has also won a National award for its special effects. The film later inspired American Filmmaker Quentin Tarantino to crate an anime action sequence in his 2003 martial arts film ‘Kill Bill: Volume 1’.

Divorce Invitation -2012 - (Telugu)

Divorce Invitation is a 2012 American rom-com that is Co-written with Robert Naturman and Bala Rajasekharuni and directed by S.V.Krishna Reddy in English based on his 1997 Indian Telugu film ‘Aahvaanam’. upon the film's release, the film reportedly received mixed reviews. Though it is said to be a remake the director later said it is completely a different subject.

​‘Drishyam’ - 2013- (Malayalam)

Drishyam is a 2013 Malayalam crime thriller film that is written and directed by Jeethu Joseph. The film stars Mohanlal and Meena playing the lead roles. The film talks about the struggle of Georgekutty (Mohanlal) and his family when they come under suspicion when the son of the Inspector General of police goes missing. This has become the first Indian movie to be remade in 3 foreign languages such as Sinhala (Srilanka) as 'Dharmayudhhyaya' (2017). Chinese ‘Sheep without a shepherd (2019). The film was also remade in Indonesian Bhasa.

​U-Turn - 2016 - (Kannada)

U-Turn is a 2016 Kannada language supernatural thriller film written, directed and produced by Pawan Kumar starring Shraddha Srinath in the lead role. The film revolves around the death of motorists who break the traffic rule in Bangalore at a flyover that has been pinned down by the intern journalist and police inspector duo. The film’s success had made the movie remade in other south Indian languages besides remaking it in Sinhala (Srilanka) in 2019 with the same title and in Filipino under the same title in 2020. It also becomes the second Indian movie to be remade in 7 Indian languages after Telugu ‘Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana’.

​Oththa Serppu Size 7 - 2019- (Tamil)

Oththa Seruppu Size 7 is again a thriller film but with only one character that was written, directed and produced by R.Parthiban under his Bioscope film Framers. The film has made several records for having a single person writing, directing, acting and producing the film. The film is currently being remade in Hindi and Telugu now becomes the first Tamil movie to be remade in Indonesia Bhasa.
