Legendary actor of Telugu cinema,
Allu Ramalingaiah was born on this very day (September 1) 99 years ago and though he breathed his last in 2004, his memorable characters are still afresh in minds of the audience. In an illustrious career spanning for over five decades, the thespian appeared in close to 1000 films and played a wide range of roles as the antagonist, comedian and supporting artist. The homoeopathic doctor and freedom fighter was awarded the Padma Shri in 1990 by the Government of India and the Raghupathi Venkaiah Award in 2001.

Chiranjeevi remembered the former on his birth anniversary and penned down a heartfelt note on social media. Terming him as a great actor, passionate doctor, committed freedom fighter, profound philosopher and a compassionate human being, the ‘Acharya’ star wrote “Fondly remembering Shri.Allu Ramalingayya garu on his 99th Birth Anniversary. More than just as my father-in-law, I have always admired his many facets, as a great Actor, a passionate Doctor, a committed Freedom Fighter, a profound Philosopher, as a guiding Mentor, as a Guru, and a compassionate human being. You will always remain in our thoughts Allu garu! And your Centenary next year will certainly be a true landmark to deservingly celebrate your illustrious life.”
Known for his mesmerising performances in classics like Mayabazar, Missamma, Mutyala Muggu, Mantri Gari Viyyankudu and several others, Ramalingaiah’s impeccable comedy timing and nasal voice distinguished many of his performances. In 1980, his daughter Surekha tied the knot with Chiranjeevi and the couple are blessed with two daughters, Sushmita and Srija, and a son,
Ram Charan.
