'Kalki 2898 AD' director Nag Ashwin believes SS Rajamouli would be perfect choice to direct Mahabharat

Director Nag Ashwin is currently basking in the success of his latest film, 'Kalki 2898 AD.' The movie, featuring Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, and Kamal Haasan, has made a remarkable impact at the box office, enjoying a phenomenal opening week and continuing its strong performance.

In a recent interview with Pinkvilla, Nag Ashwin shared his thoughts on the possibility of further exploring the Mahabharata's influence in future projects. When asked if he plans to go deeper into the epic, Ashwin indicated that any inclusion of Mahabharata elements would only happen if it serves the story. He humorously mentioned that creating a full-fledged Mahabharata film isn't on his immediate agenda.

The Mahabharata element which has been perfectly blended with science fiction has been the standout feature of the film.

The conversation then shifted to who would be the ideal director for a Mahabharata film. Without hesitation, Ashwin expressed his belief that SS Rajamouli, the visionary behind blockbuster hits like 'Baahubali' and 'RRR,' would be the perfect choice.

He said, "I think Rajamouli Sir wants to; I think he should. I think you need that passion and love for it because it is a complicated story, and it is so massive, so yeah".

Interestingly, Rajamouli has a small cameo in 'Kalki 2898 AD,' a nod to his connection with the project. The film is set in a dystopian future, 6000 years after the Mahabharata war of Kurukshetra, depicting a world oppressed by dark forces. Prabhas plays Bhairava, a determined bounty hunter, while Deepika Padukone's character, Sumathi (SUM-80), is a pregnant test subject. Amitabh Bachchan portrays Ashwatthama, a key figure from the Mahabharata, and Kamal Haasan takes on the role of the villainous supreme leader, Yaskin.
