Kisses in Tollywood: Businessman, RX 100, Arya 2, Arjun Reddy, Ye Maaya Chesave & Ra Ra Krishnayya
Till the 90s, Telugu cinema had innumerable ways to hide the inevitable kiss on the silver screen with help from a bobbing sunflower, the popping of the leg or the fogging the glass. While Bollywood has broken this taboo in 1933 with Devika Rani and Himanshu Rai indulging in an on-screen lip lock in Karma, Tollywood was uncomfortable with the brazen display of affection for a long time. However, with the rapidly changing audience tastes’ and the evolution of societal norms, the taboo has evolved to some of the most iconic kissing scenes in recent years.
In the past decade or so, big-ticket actors like Mahesh Babu, Allu Arjun, Naga Chaitanya, Kajal Aggarwal, Vijay Deverakonda and Samantha Akkineni have depicted a real kiss on the celluloid.

Naga Chaitanya and Samantha in ‘Ye Maaya Chesave’
Samantha Akkineni made her celluloid debut opposite Naga Chaitanya in Ye Maaya Chesave. Bankrolled by Mahesh Babu’s sister Manjula Ghattamaneni, the romantic-drama has recently completed a decade at the ticket counters. Besides delivering the first box-office hit to Chay, the Gautham Menon directorial showcased the Chennai beauty as the confused girl Jessie and with her kohl-rimmed eyes and beatific smile, she managed to strike the right chord. Sam’s on-screen chemistry with Chay which includes a couple of lip-locks certainly gave romantic chills to one and all.
Mahesh Babu and Kajal Aggarwal in ‘Businessman’
In Puri Jagannadh’s Businessman, Mahesh Babu delivered the first on-screen kiss of his career and gorgeous gal Kajal Aggarwal was at the receiving end. The romantic sequence took place in ‘Chandamama’ song and it was a treat to watch the sizzling chemistry between the handsome hunk and beautiful diva.
Kartikeya and Payal Rajput in ‘RX 100’
Released in 2019, ‘RX 100’ stunned the Telugu audience with its unforeseen climax, delightful songs and applaud-worthy performances. Set against the backdrop of Atreyapuram village, the obviousness of a rich-girl and poor-boy love story got an unexpected twist in the rustic drama and it brilliantly explored the male psyche and the destructive side of one-sided genuine love. Despite being new faces to Tollywood, Kartikeya and Payal Rajput displayed some stunning chemistry on the celluloid and that includes some deep kisses as well.

Towards the end of the romantic comedy, Sundeep Kishan kisses Regina Cassandra in a beautiful scene and it was an ideal finish to the film. However, the lengthy duration of this romantic act became a talking point in 2014.
Vijay Deverakonda and Shalini Panday in ‘Arjun Reddy’
Cult classic ‘Arjun Reddy’ catapulted the careers of Vijay Deverakonda and Shalini Panday and roused them to stardom on a pan-Indian scale. Written and directed by debutante Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the dark romantic-drama released to a stupendous response in 2017 from both critics and commoners. While Vijay stole the show with his no-holds-barred performance in the titular role, debutante Shalini delivered an impressive act in the author-backed role of Preeti Shetty and impressed right from the word go with her natural emotions, fresh looks and convincing acting chops. Their steamy lip-locks created a storm in the theaters.
