​Maha Shivratri special! 7 Telugu actors who portrayed Lord Shiva onscreen

Today on account of Maha Shivratri 2022, Etimes has compiled a list of actors who have portrayed Lord Shiva in Telugu films. Most of the Telugu movies have Shiva’s reference or dialogue in their content and if noticed in the Telugu film industry almost every top actor has donned the role of Lord Shiva in films. ​Sr.NTR

Senior NTR has portrayed Lord Shiva in the film ‘Dakshyagnam’ (1962). The film was directed by Kadaru Naga Bhushanam starring S.V.Ranga Rao, Devika, and NT Rama Rao. The film is said to be the 100th film of Sr.NTR that was also dubbed into Tamil Language at the same time. This is also said to be the only movie in which NTR played Shiva and is remembered in all times for his brilliant performance in the film.

​ANR

Akkineni Nageswara Rao though hasn’t played a full-length role as lord shiva, was seen as Lord Shiva in Aadurthi Subbarao's directorial ‘Muga Manasulu (1964)’ movie scenes and the song ‘Gauramma Ni MOgudevaramma’. The film is made with a concept of reincarnation was reportedly the first of its kind in Indian cinema those days. The success of this film in Telugu led to a Hindi remake in 1967 under the title ‘Milan’. The Tamil film ‘Praptham (1971) was reportedly an adaptation to the ‘Muga Manasulu’.

​Krishnam Raju

Prabhas’s uncle Krishnam Raju has also donned the character of Lord Shiva in ‘Shri Vinayaka Vijayamu’ and the famous Shiva devotee Kannappa is a Telugu remake of Kannada film ‘Bedara Kannappa’ that starred Kannada superstar Rajkumar with his elegant looks. Bhakta Kannappa is directed by Bapu and produced by Prabhas’s father U.Suryanarayana Raju. The film was cinematographed by VSR. Swamy and MV.Raghu.

Shoban Babu

Late Actor Shobhan Babu had also impressed by playing the role of Lord Shiva in the movie ‘Paramanandayya Shishyula Katha' which starred as a hero. The film was directed by C.Pullayya and its music was composed by Legendary Ghantasala. The above film was also later remade into Kannada as ‘Guru Shishyaru’ in 1981.

​Chiranjeevi in Sri Manjunadha (2001)

Megastar Chiranjeevi has played the role of Lord Shiva in the K.Raghavendra Rao’s directorial film ‘Sri Manjunatha (2001). The film was shot simultaneously in Telugu and Kannada. Kannada superstars Ambareesh, Arjun Sarja, Soundarya, and Meena played other important roles in the film. The film’s music composed by Hamsalekha is popular even today and Every Monday there is no music or spiritual channel that stars without this song ‘Mahaprana Deepam’. Chiranjeevi also played lord shiva in the 2013 film ‘Jagaduguru Adi Shankara’.

Balakrishna in ‘Akhanda’ (2021)

2021 film ‘Akhanda’ directed by Boyapati Srinu starring Nandamuri Balakrishna in the titular character. Though the film got mixed reviews from the critics. The film was a successful venture at the box office.

Balakrishna played a dual role in the film in which one of its violent characters ‘Akhanda’ resembles Lord Shiva the film. The success of this film is also now reportedly remaking it in Bollywood. Balakrishna also played the role of lord shiva Jandhyala’s ‘Seetharama Kalyanam’ film song.
