'Mahanati': Five reasons why you should watch much-awaited Savitri biopic
‘Mahanati’, the much-awaited Savitri biopic starring Keerthy Suresh, Dulquer Salmaan, Samantha and Vijay Deverakonda, along with an extensive cast releases on May 9. The film that charts the rise and downfall of the yesteryear actress has caught the attention of many for all the right reasons. Directed by Nag Ashwin, the filmmakers have been busy whipping up curiosity for the film with various kinds of promotions. However, while biopic enthusiasts and Savitri fans will have enough reasons to catch the film, we give you our reasons why:
Relive the glory of Mahanati Savitri
Rising to stardom at a very young age, Savitri caught the attention of viewers not just for her good looks, but also for her admirable acting chops. Acting with all the bigwigs in the industry, Savitri’s rise to fame was a true story of rags to riches. However, she was also quite a scandalous name in the industry, thanks to her marrying the already wed Gemini Ganeshan and her downfall later on due to alcoholism. It would be interesting to see a film that charts her journey right from childhood to fame, and later, downfall and death.
The stupendous star-cast
‘Mahanati’ will see an extensive star cast not just with the lead actors, but also with actors like Rajendra Prasad, Tanikella Bharani, Shalini Pandey, Jr NTR, Naga Chaitanya, Srinivas Avasarala, Sandeep Reddy Vanga and more actors rumoured to be a part of the film in some form or the other. Mohan Babu is confirmed to be playing a cameo, by portraying the role of SV Ranga Rao, while Prakash Raj will be playing the role of Aluri Chakrapani. With a cast like that, it’s no surprise that nothing less than magic is expected.
Nag Ashwin’s direction
After directing a gem of a film like ‘Yevade Subramanyam’, expectations are extremely high on ‘Mahanati’, and even more so because it’s a Savitri biopic. Nag Ashwin has previously admitted that he only took on the job of making this film after doing thorough research by reading the star’s interviews, talking to journalists and actors who had previously worked with her. Even in ‘Yevade Subramanyam’, Nag Ashwin had dealt with the themes of depression, greed, friendship, love and more in a beautiful manner. So it’s only natural to expect him to do so in this one too.
Keerthy Suresh’s costumes and jewellery
While Gaurang Shah designed Keerthy Suresh’s costumes in the film, Naveen and Rajesh Sangli of L Bajrang Pershad Jewellers designed her jewellery. Both the teams had worked hard on getting her look right, putting in their research and thumbing through old jewellery books to recreate jewels from the 50s to 80s era. Such care was put into them that, the costumes took over a 100 artisans over a year to create, while the jewellery was painstakingly handmade by 15 karigars over a span of 6 months. Savitri was well known for her weaves and jewels on-screen, so it would be beautiful to see them recreated.
The Mayabazar sequence
One of the most exciting announcements the filmmakers had made was that a portion of Savitri’s hit film ‘Mayabazar’ would be recreated for the film. They even posted pictures of Keerthy Suresh’s character Savitri dressed as Sasirekha from the song ‘Aaha Naa Pellanta’ and Mohan Babu’s character SV Ranga Rao dressed as Ghatotkacha from the film. The pictures created enough curiosity for many to be excited to see how much and what sequences of ‘Mayabazar’ will be filmed.
