Senior Odia actress Jharana Das died at the age of 77 during the late hours yesterday at her residence. She is said to be the winner of the Prestigious Jaydev Puraskar State award for her contribution to the Art & Entertainment Industry. She was said to be suffering from age-related ailments for the past few months as per her family sources.
She was born in 1945 and got into acting at an early age and performed as a child artist on stage and then as an All India Radio announcer in Cuttack. She then started her acting career in the 1960s and since then worked in some of the milestone Odia films such as ‘Nari’, ‘Shree Jagannath’, Heera Nella’, ‘Hisabnikas’, ‘Abhinetri’, ‘Malajanha’, ‘Adinamegha’ and others.
She is also reported to have worked as a Station Director for Doordarshan in Cuttack. Her directional biographical film on former Odisha CM Harekrushna Mahtab is reported to be very popular even today.
Odisha Chief Minister Shri Naveen Patnaik has condoled her demise and reportedly announced that her last rites be performed with full state honours. “Her performances on stage and in the film will always be remembered. May her soul rest in peace and my condolences to the bereaved family," he said in a statement. Another Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan has also condoled Jharana Das’s demise.
President of India Shri Droupadi Murmu has taken to Twitter to condole Jharanas’s demise and wrote,” Saddened to know about the demise of legendary Odia actress Jharana Das. She will always be remembered for her outstanding contribution to the Odia film industry. My deepest condolences to the family and her admirers”, she added.
