Actress Pranitha Subash who is being lauded for her relief efforts during the
coronavirus crisis has now penned an emotional letter on the eve of World Environment Day.
In the letter, the Atharintiki Daaredi actress details how the Earth has started healing itself since human beings have been locked indoors for the last two months. The letter read “I do not normally pen pieces, but considering the testing times that we live in the least that we humans can do is to adapt to the circumstances and help those in need.
Due to the ongoing pandemic, millions have lost jobs, migrants are homeless and there is a growing sense of restlessness all around the world. Even before Covid-19 could strike, there were issues that we Indians faced collectively. In the Stockholm Conference of 1972, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) decided to set aside June 5 as a day every year to celebrate World Environment Day. A lot has changed since the five decades. If you want me to look on the bright side, the world has grown more sensitive to ecological issues lately and has been making conscious efforts to harness sustainable energy. But the flip side was the loss of thousands of species of mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish that have gone extinct since then. But in the last two months, nature has signalled us that it is easily capable of healing itself. For the first time in many years, one could wake up to the views of the majestic Himalayan ranges from Saharanpur, several stretches of the Ganga river were deemed fit for achaman, and dolphins have resumed swimming in the ghats of Kolkata. This World Environment Day, the theme set by the United Nations is Time for Nature'. While I wish that we are better equipped to deal with our challenges now, I also need to make an addendum. The thing that nature needs the most from us humans, is space. We need to distance ourselves for a while so that we can make amends for all the damage done, and let nature heal. Unless we do that, we will continue to see that the air quality of Delhi will nosedive, lakes of Bengaluru will be polluted again and Chennai will face water-shortages in no time. I wish it to be otherwise, but that's the reality which won't change in a day or two, or without the collective will of many. Humanity has to step up, take some time out consciously for nature, and help it recover itself.”
Fans appreciated her well-informed note and thanked her for her various gestures including her efforts to help during the Kodugu floods.
