Sita Ramam, Kurup, Beast: 5 South Indian movies banned in other countries

Movies serve as a powerful medium for critiquing politically incorrect situations and highlighting corrupt or unequal social practices globally. The issue of censorship and control over films has become a major topic of discussion. Recently, the film 'Kaathal: The Core,' featuring Mega star Mammootty, faced a ban in two Arab countries due to its inclusion of homosexual content.

This is not an isolated incident; other films, such as Vijay's 'Beast' and Mohanlal's 'Monster,' have also been banned in certain countries. Let's take a look at five South Indian movies that have faced bans in other nations.

'Sita Ramam'

The Pan Indian movie starring Dulquer Salmaan and Mrunal Thakur, titled 'Sita Ramam,' enjoyed success upon its release in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Hindi. However, it faced a restriction preventing its release in several countries, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, and Oman. The reason behind this ban is linked to the film's content. Set in the 1960s against the backdrop of war, 'Sita Ramam' is a period film that delves into certain religious sensitivities. Due to these themes, the censor boards in the mentioned countries did not grant approval for the film's release. Essentially, the film's portrayal of religious elements led to its restriction in these regions.

'Beast'

The Tamil film 'Beast,' starring Thalapathy Vijay and directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, hit theaters on April 13, 2022. The storyline follows an ex-RAW agent on a mission to rescue hostages held by terrorists in a shopping mall. While the film garnered commercial success in theaters, it faced a ban in Kuwait and Qatar.

The reason behind the ban was the portrayal of Islamic individuals as extremists in the movie. This decision sparked controversy, leading to the film being restricted in these countries. Noteworthy cast members included Pooja Hegde, Selvaraghavan, Shaji Chen, VTV Ganesh, and Yogi Babu. Despite its box office success, 'Beast' received mixed to negative reviews from critics.

Kurup

The movie 'Kurup,' starring Dulquer Salmaan and Sobhita Dhulipala, was a biographical crime thriller based on the life of fugitive Sukumara Kurup. Directed by Srinath Rajendran and produced by Dulquer Salmaan himself, the film was released in multiple languages and achieved significant commercial success in Malayalam cinema in 2021. The storyline revolves around the fugitive's life, Sukumara Kurup, and depicts his escape to Kuwait, where he seeks refuge. However, despite its success, the film faced a ban in Kuwait due to its portrayal of the fugitive's connection to the country. Despite the ban in Kuwait, 'Kurup' made a substantial impact on Malayalam cinema.

'Vishwaroopam'

'Vishwaroopam' featuring Kamal Haasan in the lead role and directed by him as well, is a spy action thriller made in both Tamil and Hindi languages. The film encountered various issues, ranging from domestic controversies related to its title and portrayal of Islam to international bans in countries like the UAE and Malaysia. In the UAE, the film faced a ban due to its depiction of Islam being linked with terrorism. The controversy extended to Malaysia, where Muslim groups raised complaints, leading to the film being banned in the country. These issues highlight the challenges faced by the movie, both domestically and internationally, related to its portrayal of sensitive subjects and their impact on its reception in certain regions.

'FIR'

'FIR: Faizal Ibrahim Raiz,' a Tamil crime thriller featuring Vishnu Vishal in the lead role, marked the directorial debut of Manu Anand and was co-produced by Vishnu Vishal himself. The film also starred Gautham Vasudev Menon, Manjima Mohan, Reba Monica John, and others in prominent roles. Despite its noteworthy cast and creative team, the movie faced a ban in countries like Kuwait, Malaysia, and Qatar. The reason behind this restriction was the denial of approval by the censor boards in these countries. The film's content or portrayal might have raised concerns or objections, leading to its prohibition in these specific regions. This incident sheds light on the challenges films can encounter in securing approval for their content in various countries.
