South Indian cinema has had a huge transformation in recent years, not only in its storytelling and scale but also in the technical aspects as wekk that elevate the cinema watching experience. Recently, there has been an increasing collaboration between South Indian filmmakers and international studios, particularly in the visual effects (VFX) and special effects. This is creating an impact on the industry's creative and production paradigms, allowing regional films to compete on a global stage with Hollywood-level visual grandeur.

South Indian films, especially Telugu, Tamil, and Kannada cinema, have increased in popularity across India and internationally. This rise is driven by a combination of some stories with creative storytelling, emotional depth, star power, and technical achievements. 'Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown-Ups'

Monster Mind Creations is co-producing the film, and it has assembled an international team to match its scale and ambition. Directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Geetu Mohandas, 'Toxic' is being positioned as a global gangster thriller.
As per a Pinkvilla report, 'Toxic' is expected to collaborate with 20th Century Fox for international distribution.
A standout feature of 'Toxic' is its world-class action sequences, choreographed by JJ Perry, a renowned stunt coordinator known for his work on Hollywood franchises such as 'John Wick' and 'Fast & Furious'. Complementing the action are the film's visual effects, handled by DNEG, the BAFTA-winning VFX studio behind the highly acclaimed 'Dune: Part Two'. This partnership with DNEG underscores the filmmakers’ dedication to cutting-edge visual storytelling.
'SSMB29': SS Rajamouli and Mahesh Babu's visual spectacle
The much-anticipated 'SSMB29', directed by SS Rajamouli and starring Mahesh Babu, is another landmark project that highlights the trend of international VFX collaboration. Rajamouli, known for his visual mastery in 'Baahubali' and 'RRR', is reportedly partnering with Hollywood studios to deliver extensive VFX and high-end graphics for this jungle adventure action drama. The production strategy involves shooting VFX-heavy sequences first, allowing simultaneous post-production work to optimize the film's quality and timeline. The film has a staggering budget reportedly around Rs 1000 crore where Mahesh Babu and SS Rajamouli are also joining as co-producers of the project.
For the pre-production of the film, involved international technical experts, with Mahesh Babu himself reportedly travelling to Germany for a three-day session focused on the film’s technical aspects. Increasing the international appeal the film also stars Priyanka Chopra and Prithviraj Sukumaran in key roles.
Allu Arjun and Atlee's upcoming collaboration
Allu Arjun and director Atlee are working on their next big film, tentatively titled 'AA22xA6', marking Allu Arjun’s first major international venture. This project looks to be a sci-fi action blockbuster with Indian roots and global appeal.
Recently, Allu Arjun and Atlee travelled to Los Angeles to engage directly with top Hollywood visual effects studios. They met with renowned VFX experts including Jos Fernandez, CEO and Art Director of Ironhead Studio, known for his work on 'Spider-Man: Homecoming', 'Captain America: Civil War', and 'Avengers: Age of Ultron'. They also consulted with James Madigan, a VFX supervisor famous for 'Iron Man 2' and 'GI Joe: Retaliation'.
Mike Elizalde, Artistic Director at Spectral Motion, shared, “The script is seriously unlike anything I've ever read. It is the best of the best of what I would ever want to create."
Justin Raleigh, CEO of Fractured FX, said, "Reading through it, I’m very excited about all the potential creatures, all the different character possibilities."
'Vishwambhara'
Megastar Chiranjeevi's is working on his upcoming mega socio-fantasy film 'Vishwambhara'. As per a report by 123Telugu, the makers have reportedly allocated a staggering Rs 75 crore solely for the film's VFX and are expected to collaborate with some top Hollywood studios.
The film's teaser, released earlier, faced criticism for its subpar visuals. It was later clarified by the producers that the teaser's visuals were generated using Artificial Intelligence (AI) rather than finalized VFX, which led to the backlash. As per a Gulte report, filmmaker Mallidi Satyanarayana Reddy explained that the VFX companies initially estimated a three-month timeline to complete the work, but even after six months, the VFX was unfinished. To manage deadlines, AI-generated visuals were used for the teaser, but following the negative response, the team decided to abandon AI and focus solely on high-quality VFX.
In response to the criticism and to match world-class standards, the makers increased the VFX budget by an additional Rs 20 crore, bringing the total estimated VFX investment to around Rs 75 crore.
Upon working with the international studios, trade analyst Taran Aadarsh said, "I think it's a great initiative that Indian filmmakers are collaborating with international studios. It brings in high-quality output and elevates the overall film experience. You're assured of a world-class product. I believe it's a fantastic move. When SS Rajamouli's 'RRR' was released, it received immense acclaim from international audiences and technicians. Now, we see Atlee and Allu Arjun working with global talent for their next, tentatively titled, 'AA22xA6'. Shah Rukh Khan is also heard to be joining hands with foreign technicians for his upcoming projects."
