What barriers did you face as a woman?

There are several barriers for every woman in every field. But specifically with respect to acting and for me I have faced certain barriers. I have already spoken about the same. There were some young heroes don’t want to work with me because I’ve worked with a senior hero. I’ve missed out on a lot of opportunities because of that. I just think it is unfair because they rejected me for working with a senior actor rather than realizing my talent. Actresses should be selected based on how they could perform not based on who they worked with. So that is the barrier I am still facing. I am grateful for all the work I have done. And I am grateful for all the people who choose to work with me.

What is your advice for women who want to become an actress?

I think there is no way to encourage acting as a profession. Acting is something which you must have passion for because it is one of the toughest jobs in the world. It’s also extremely rewarding. Of course, you cannot compare it with any other job. You have to be mentally very strong for the challenges it brings. You may not have financial stability but if you love performing, there is nothing and no one can stop you. You just need to believe in yourself. Be persistent and never give up on your dreams. Keep chasing your dreams and work towards your goals. There is only one thing that we require for an actor is passion. If you have that passion, it’s enough to make you a super hardworking person to break all barriers.

Who has inspired you in your life and how?

There are a lot of people who inspired me to be honest. But there is one person who always stands out for me is Priyanka Chopra. I have been a fangirl since I was very little. She is an absolute global icon. It’s not only her performances but it’s also her charity work. She is such an inspirational personality. The way she inspires girls all over the world and the kind of philanthropy she does is absolutely inspiring. She encourages women to stand up for themselves. You can just feel that fire every time you see her interview or onscreen. Undoubtedly, she is a beauty with brains.

Tell us something about the bond you share with your mother?

My mother and I are actually best friends. She is the most dialled number on my phone. I’ve saved her number as a momager because she is the one who manages my profession. Every detail of my life is something she knows whether it is my personal or professional. Every morning we sit and have tea together. So that’s the way we spend quality time together at the start of every day. Other than that, we love shopping and we love travelling together. She is literally like my shadow.

On International Women's Day, what advice would you give to young women?

My most important message for young women would be to believe in themselves and never let anyone question their beliefs. If others believe in you or not, it doesn’t matter and you have faith in yourself. Be your own superwoman. Stand up not just for yourself but for women around you. If you’ve ever seen any woman subjected to injustice or inequality, stand up for them, make them realize, make them stand up and fight for whatever barrier they face. It’s extremely important because that’s how we can move forward together as a society.
