5 countries where you can drive with an Indian driving licence

The wind whipping through your hair, your favourite playlist blasting, a friend in the passenger seat gossiping about life back home, and endless roads stretching ahead of you. This is exactly what a perfect holiday feels like for motorheads. There is nothing quite like hitting the road in a foreign land. Before you pack your bags and hit the open road, here is a list of nations where you are good to head out with your Indian driving licence.

2/7

Bhutan

If you have an Indian driving licence, you are allowed to drive through the picturesque mountains of Bhutan. You can drive for up to one year with your vehicle, provided that you have the vehicle documents and registration on the Check Post Management System, along with a payment of Nu4,500 (Rs4,490).

3/7

Canada

Canada is a dream destination for Indian road trippers, and the good news is that your Indian driving licence is valid here. You can drive in the country; however, the timeframe depends on the province you are in. It is important to plan. For instance, in Ontario, if your stay is less than three months, you do not require any documents other than your licence. Beyond that, you will need an International Driving Permit.

4/7

Switzerland

Switzerland is an Alpine paradise for road trippers, and yes, your Indian driving licence is recognised here. You can drive through Switzerland with your licence for up to a year. You can also lease a vehicle with a copy of your licence in English in the country.

5/7

Australia

Thinking of exploring the spectacular Great Ocean Road in Australia? Well then, pack your bags. Your Indian driving licence is valid across most of Australia, but not in the Northern Territory, New South Wales, and Victoria.

6/7

Finland

The Northern Lights, the pristine forests, and the lakeside routes make Finland a dream destination for petrolheads. This country allows you to drive with your Indian driving licence. You will need either a legalised translation of your licence or an International Driving Permit to drive here.

7/7

What you should know

Though many countries allow you to drive with an Indian driving licence, it is always better to have an International Driving Permit on hand. You can apply for one at the nearest RTO; the process takes about a week and is valid for a year from the date of issue.
