5 largest birds around the world that will leave one in awe!

Birds come in all shapes and sizes, from tiny hummingbirds to majestic eagles. Among this vast diversity, some species are exceptional because of their huge size and strength. These giant birds have interested and scared people for centuries due to their unique capabilities, extraordinary speed, and dominance in their habitats. Whether it’s their height, weight, or running speed, the largest birds show nature’s incredible diversity.

Common ostrich

The common ostrich holds the title of the largest bird on Earth. Standing up to 9 feet tall and weighing as much as 130 kg, ostriches are giants among nearly 10,000 bird species. These flightless birds live mainly in Africa and are famous for their long legs and necks. They are also very fast runners, reaching speeds up to 72 km/h, using their powerful legs to escape predators and cover vast distances.

Somali ostrich

The Somali ostrich is closely related to the common ostrich but has its own unique features. Native to Eastern Africa, it can also grow up to 2.7 meters tall and weigh around 130 kg. Known for its distinctive blue neck, this bird was reclassified as a separate species in 2014. It is a quick and flexible runner capable of covering 5 meters in a single stride, which helps it move across the open landscapes of its habitat.

Emu

The emu is the third-largest bird and the biggest native to Australia. Emus can reach heights of up to 2 meters and weigh around 70 kg. Like ostriches, emus are flightless but are excellent runners, reaching speeds of about 48 km/h. Their three-toed feet provide great momentum, and their small wings help maintain balance during fast sprints. Emus are curious birds known for their unique calls and social behaviour.

5/6

Southern cassowary

The southern cassowary is a frightening bird native to the rainforests of Australia and New Guinea. It stands around 2 meters tall and can weigh up to 76 kg. Known for its bright blue neck and helmet-like casque on its head, the cassowary is a powerful bird capable of running quickly through dense forests. It’s considered one of the most dangerous birds due to its strong legs and sharp claws.

Dalmatian pelican

Unlike the other giant flightless birds, the Dalmatian pelican is the largest flying bird by wingspan. It can reach a wingspan of up to 11.5 feet and weigh up to 15 kg.
