7 animals with the strongest bites in the world

In the wild, it’s not always about how fast or big an animal is. Sometimes, what really matters is how strong its bite is. An animal’s bite force– measured in pounds per square inch (psi) – tells us how much pressure it can apply when it bites. This strength helps them hunt, eat, and protect themselves.

Some animals have developed incredibly powerful jaws that can crush bones, crack shells, or hold onto prey without letting go. From the deep oceans to dense forests and icy lands, these animals use their bite force in different ways to survive. Here are seven animals that are known for having the strongest bite forces in the animal kingdom.

2/8

Great White Shark

The great white shark is one of the top predators in the ocean. It has a bite force of up to 4,000 psi, which helps it tear through the flesh and bones of seals and other large sea animals. Its sharp teeth and strong jaw make sure that once it bites, the prey doesn’t stand a chance.

3/8

American Alligator

Found in the rivers and swamps of the United States, the American alligator has a bite strength of around 2,125 psi. That’s more than enough to crush bones. It uses its powerful jaw to catch fish, birds, and even mammals, holding on tight until the prey is completely overpowered.

4/8

Hippopotamus

Hippos may look calm and slow, but they are surprisingly aggressive and strong. Their bite force is about 1,800 psi, which can crush bones and even damage boats. They use their large jaws mainly for defense and fighting, especially when protecting their territory.

5/8

Jaguar

Unlike most other big cats, jaguars go for the head. With a bite force of around 1,500 psi, they are able to bite straight through the skull of their prey. They can also crack open turtle shells, which other big cats can’t do. This makes them one of the most powerful hunters in the wild.

6/8

Gorilla

Even though gorillas mostly eat plants, their bite force is very impressive– about 1,300 psi. Their strong jaws are made to chew tough foods like roots, stems, and bark. While they are not aggressive by nature, their bite strength shows just how powerful they are.

7/8

Polar Bear

Living in the cold Arctic, polar bears depend on their strength to survive. Their bite force, close to 1,200 psi, helps them hunt seals and break through ice. As the largest carnivore on land, their powerful bite is a key part of their hunting ability.

8/8

Spotted Hyena

Spotted hyenas are often seen as scavengers, but they are also skilled hunters. Their bite force is about 1,100 psi, strong enough to crush large bones and reach the nutritious marrow inside. This gives them an advantage over many other animals when it comes to feeding.
