8 of the world’s oldest creatures

It’s hard to imagine that some creatures on Earth have survived for millions of years. While many species have come and gone, there are a few remarkable animals that have managed to adapt and thrive despite the ever-changing planet. These “living fossils” have witnessed the notable rise and fall of civilizations, survived mass extinctions, and have survived countless changes in the environment, showing nature’s strength and the power of evolution. Let’s take a closer look at these incredible creatures that have been around long before humans.

2/9

Horseshoe Crab

The horseshoe crab is one of the oldest creatures alive today, with a history stretching back more than 450 million years. This ancient species predates the dinosaurs, and it has hardly changed since then. What makes it especially fascinating is its blue blood, which is used in medical testing to detect bacterial contamination in vaccines and medical devices. Despite being so ancient, the horseshoe crab continues to play an important role in modern medicine.

3/9

Tuatara

The tuatara is a reptile that looks like it belongs in a prehistoric world. Native to New Zealand, it has been around for over 200 million years, surviving alongside the dinosaurs. One of the most unique features of the tuatara is its third “parietal” eye, located on top of its head. This eye helps the tuatara regulate its body temperature. Thanks to its slow metabolism and adaptability to the isolated environment of New Zealand, the tuatara has managed to survive while many other species from its era have disappeared.

4/9

Sturgeon

Sturgeons are an ancient species of fish that have existed for over 200 million years. With their long, tough bodies and bony plates, they have a prehistoric look that reflects their deep history. These fish have adapted to both freshwater and saltwater environments, proving their ability to survive through changing conditions. However, many sturgeon species are now endangered due to overfishing and habitat loss. Despite these threats, their survival through ice ages and environmental shifts is a testament to their resilience.

5/9

Hagfish

The hagfish is often considered one of the most ancient creatures still alive today. It has been around for about 300 million years and is one of the few animals without a jaw or backbone. What makes it unique is its ability to release large amounts of slime when threatened, helping it slip away from predators. Living in the deep sea, the hagfish’s survival in such harsh conditions showcases its old adaptations and remarkable toughness.

6/9

Chambered Nautilus

The chambered nautilus, with its beautiful spiral shell, is a true living fossil. It has been existing for over 500 million years, barely changing as the world around it evolved. Using its shell to control buoyancy, it moves smoothly through the water. Even as the oceans have changed over time, this ancient species has survived, proving its ability to endure.

7/9

Platypus

The platypus is one of the most unique mammals alive today. Native to Australia, it combines traits from both mammals and reptiles. It lays eggs, like a reptile, but it also produces milk, a trait common to mammals. With its duck-like bill, webbed feet, and beaver-like tail, the platypus looks like a mix of several animals, making it one of nature’s oddest creatures. Despite its strange features, the platypus has survived for over 100 million years and continues to thrive in Australian rivers.

8/9

Triops

Triops, or tadpole shrimp, are tiny creatures that have been around for about 300 million years. They are incredibly resilient, capable of surviving extreme conditions. When faced with drought or other harsh environments, their eggs can remain unchanged for years, waiting for the right conditions to hatch. Once the environment is favourable again, the eggs hatch, and life continues. This remarkable ability to “pause” life when necessary has helped triops survive through changing climates and ecosystems.

9/9

Jellyfish

Jellyfish are perhaps the most ancient creatures on Earth. They’ve been around for more than 500 million years, long before humans or dinosaurs appeared. Despite their simple structure– lacking a brain, heart, or bones– jellyfish have mastered survival in the oceans. Their ability to adapt to different environments, along with their resilience in the face of mass extinctions, has allowed jellyfish to thrive in oceans across the world.
