How much attention do humans ever pay to Chandeliers? A quick glance is at times enough to know that the chandelier is detailed, sparkly, has many light sources or is of wood, metal or any other material. While chandeliers have the power to light up and beautify any space, how expensive they are is usually not the first question in people’s minds. But, did you know that there are some chandeliers that have been sold by famous auction houses for over millions of dollars?

Russian Ormolu and Cut-Glass Chandelier

The ‘Russian Ormolu and Cut-Glass Chandelier’ was sold for $869,313 at a Christie’s auction in 2000. It was created sometime during the 1800’s but the artist is unknown. According to Christie’s website, “The dished corona mounted with acanthus and laurel branches and suspending from cut-glass-set chains, the spirally faceted circular bowl with winged putto finial holding aloft a glass dish with vase-shaped nozzle, the swan-cast scrolling branches terminating in vase-shaped nozzles, the bowl with a conforming spirally cut boss terminal.”

​Varnished and Gilt-Bronze Cut-Glass Chandelier

The ‘Varnished and Gilt-Bronze Cut-Glass Chandelier’ was sold for $1.7 million at a Sotheby’s auction. The chandelier is said to be created somewhere in the 1800’s and features cut-glass prisms and gilt-bronze mounts.
According to MoneyInc, “This particular chandelier was large enough to house 12 lights. It had a central fluted shaft decorated with water leaves, seeds, and a frieze of posts. The chandelier could hold twisted branches that are topped by crystal daggers. Its gilt-bronze frame was decorated with rosette motifs, acanthus leaves, female faces, and bearded satyrs. As for the wicks, they are decorated with cut crystal pendants.”

Alberto Bruni Tedeschi Imperial Chandelier

The ‘Alberto Bruni Tedeschi Imperial Chandelier’ was sold for $1.3 million at a Sotheby’s auction in 2012. It is said that it was made by Napoleon's furniture supplier. According to Sotheby’s, “with a circular reeded corona hung with a stem mounted with a row of columns forming a rotunda surmounting a diamond cut bowl mounted with ten swans and supporting thirty scrolled candle arms emanating from ten candle branches, above a further cut crystal ball finial, the whole lavishly hung with faceted drops.”

Eight-Light Gilt Bronze Chandelier

According to Rarest, “This style of early eighteenth-century chandelier, which is lavishly decorated with satyr masks and female busts, is frequently linked to renowned André-Charles Boulle’s creations. The eight-light Gilt bronze chandelier made by him was sold at the prestigious Sotheby’s auction in London for a staggering $1.47 million. Boulle received the honorific titles of cabinetmaker and sculptor from Louis XIV in 1672.” The chandelier features eight lights, gilt-bronze mounts, and cut-glass prisms.

Imperial Neoclassical 18-Light Chandelier

The ‘Imperial Neoclassical 18-Light Chandelier’ was sold for $815,025 at a Christie’s auction in 2010. It is said that it was created by Johann Zeck somewhere around the 1700’s and sold in 2010 at a whopping price. According to Christie’s website, “The ruby glass vase-form corona issuing abundant ormolu rushes, each hung with cut-glass drops, above a baluster glass stem and fluted circular frame issuing scrolling branches terminating in foliate drip pans and sockets, stiff leaves, and cut-glass prisms, all hung with pendant drops, terminating in a pinecone boss.”

Givenchy Royal Hanover

Prepare to be amazed, for the most expensive chandelier to ever be sold was the Givenchy Royal Hanover German. This chandelier was sold for $9 million at a Christie’s auction in 2011 and is said to be created by William Kent. The chandelier is made of silver and features eight lights. According to Christie’s website, “Commissioned by King George II of Great Britain and Elector of Hanover (r.1727-1760) for his palace in Hanover, and then by descent to his son.”
