Did the UN try to trip up Donald Trump and Melania Trump? How a 3-second jolt and Laura Loomer’s explosive claims became an international scandal
An escalator, a stopped step, a flurry of accusations, what sounded like a mild mechanical hiccup at the United Nations has exploded into a full-blown political showdown. On September 23, 2025, as President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump made their way into UN headquarters ahead of his General Assembly address, the escalator they boarded reportedly came to an abrupt halt. The First Lady jolted forward; the two then walked up the motionless stairs.
The UN’s official response? A built-in safety mechanism was triggered, one intended to stop the escalator motor if an obstruction is detected at the “comb plate” (the toothed interface between the steps and landing). A UN spokesperson claimed a videographer from the US delegation, walking ahead of the couple, inadvertently triggered that safety switch, causing the escalator to pause.
President Trump immediately accused the UN of sabotage, demanding arrests and calling the incident part of a broader scheme to humiliate or even injure him. He claimed the escalator “stopped on a dime” as soon as the First Lady stepped onto it, and warned of potential catastrophic injury had they fallen.

Now enters Laura Loomer, social media activist known for embracing conspiracy narratives. In a fresh post, she tapes an “Exclusive” claim: that President Trump and the First Lady’s exceptional physical condition foiled a premeditated assassination attempt at UNGA (United Nations General Assembly). She asserts that the stoppage was not an innocent safety trigger — but a remote-controlled act from a UN control room, timed to cause a fall that could have inflicted serious harm. She argues that the videographer was too far from the comb plate to have triggered it and backs her claims with manufacturer diagrams of escalator safety systems.
The official UN take: Safety mechanism gone off
The escalator’s built-in safety feature at a comb plate (top or bottom landing) is designed to halt the motor if it detects a blockage or misalignment.
The UN claims CCTV review and diagnostics point to the videographer stepping ahead, triggering the sensor.
The instance is not unique: UN buildings have had elevators and escalators intermittently go offline as part of cost-cutting or maintenance.
The counterclaim: Sabotage, remote control and intentional harm
Trump and Loomer argue the timing, stoppage right as the First Lady stepped on, is too precise for an accident.
She also disputes that the videographer’s position could have triggered the safety sensor, suggesting that evidence (e.g. manufacturer diagrams) supports her side.
Both Trump’s camp and Loomer frame this as more than a glitch, it’s an aggressive act meant to demean or physically harm.
