A glimpse into his academic pursuits

Chirag Paswan, born on October 31, 1982, is a notable Indian politician and the son of the late Ram Vilas Paswan, a renowned political leader. He is affiliated with the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), which was founded by his father. Recently, Chirag has been in the news for his induction into Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet, where he was appointed as the Minister of Food Processing. This appointment comes after his significant victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where he solidified his position as a key ally in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Schooling and early education

Chirag Paswan’s educational foundation was laid at the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) in Delhi, an institution established in November 1989 as an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Human Resource Development. NIOS is recognized for its inclusive approach to education, offering a variety of vocational, life enrichment, and community-oriented courses, in addition to general and academic programs at secondary and senior secondary levels. This flexible system of education is designed to meet the needs of a diverse group of learners, providing opportunities for students like Paswan to pursue their studies alongside other interests.

Engineering aspirations and a shift in path

With an initial interest in technology, Paswan pursued a Bachelor of Technology degree in Computer Engineering at the Institute of Engineering and Technology in Jhansi. The institute, affiliated with Bundelkhand University, is known for its rigorous engineering curriculum and emphasis on practical knowledge. However, Paswan’s stint in the engineering domain was short-lived as he chose to leave the program during his third semester. This decision marked a significant shift in his career trajectory, as he moved away from the world of algorithms and coding to pursue his burgeoning interest in the arts. It was a bold move that would eventually lead him to the silver screens of Bollywood before his eventual foray into the political arena.

A brief stint in acting

Paswan’s brief encounter with Bollywood began with the romantic comedy ‘Miley Naa Miley Hum,’ released on November 4, 2011. Directed by Tanveer Khan, the film featured Paswan in the lead role as an aspiring tennis player, alongside Kangana Ranaut who played his love interest, a model. Despite the presence of established actors like Kabir Bedi and Poonam Dhillon, and a soundtrack by Sajid-Wajid, the film did not fare well at the box office.

Political entry and ascension

The transition from acting to politics was swift for Paswan. He joined the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) in 2012, following in the footsteps of his father, Ram Vilas Paswan, who was a distinguished political leader and the founder of LJP. This move was a clear indication of his desire to impact public life and policy. His entry into politics was a commitment to continue his father’s legacy and to serve the people of India. Chirag’s political acumen quickly became evident as he navigated the complexities of Indian politics, leading to his election as a Member of Parliament from the Jamui constituency in Bihar during the 2014 general elections.

Leadership and representation

By 2019, Paswan had ascended to the role of national president of the LJP. Under his leadership, LJP faced and overcame numerous challenges, including internal disputes and political rivalries. His ability to lead was put to the test during the tumultuous times following his father’s passing. Despite these trials, Paswan demonstrated remarkable resilience and strategic prowess. In the 2019 general elections, he not only retained his seat but also secured a commendable 528,771 votes, reflecting the trust and support he garnered from the electorate. His leadership qualities were further validated in the 2024 elections, where he led the LJP to victory in all five Lok Sabha seats it contested, maintaining a perfect strike rate and solidifying his position as a significant Dalit leader in Bihar’s political landscape. This success story is evidence of Paswan’s dedication to his father’s legacy and his commitment to the ‘Bihar first, Bihari first’ agenda
