Why is Karwa Chauth celebrated?
The word “Karwa” refers to an earthen pot used to store water, and “Chauth” means the fourth day. During the puja, women fill a Karwa with water and offer it to the Moon and to Goddess Parvati as a symbol of life, abundance, and devotion. The pot represents peace and prosperity within the household. Several legends explain the origin of Karwa Chauth. The most popular is the story of Queen Veeravati, whose devotion brought her husband back to life after she mistakenly broke her fast early. Another tale speaks of a devoted wife named Karwa, who saved her husband from death through her prayers to Lord Yama. In the Mahabharata, Draupadi also observed a similar fast for Arjuna’s safety, guided by Lord Krishna. All these stories highlight a wife’s love, loyalty, and the divine strength of her devotion.

Today, Karwa Chauth is celebrated with great enthusiasm and joy. Women dress in festive attire, apply mehendi (henna), wear traditional jewelry, and gather for the Karwa Chauth puja in the evening. They listen to the Karwa Chauth Katha (story), pray together, and wait eagerly for the moonrise. Once the moon is visible, women view it through a sieve, offer water to the moon, and then look at their husband’s face before breaking the fast.
