The six stages of cherry blossom growth

The process through which cherry blossoms reach their full bloom is completed in six stages, as per the National Park Service. First, the round green buds appear, which develop into small florets. These develop, and peduncles (stalk of the flower) get elongated. Then appear the puffy white petals, which bloom and spread a pink hue all around.

How do cherry blossoms grow in Washington DC?

The cherry blossoms in Washington DC are symbols of friendship between the two countries, Japan and the United States of America. The iconic cherry blossom trees were gifted by the People of Japan to the People of United States in 1912. Tokyo’s mayor Yukio Ozaki supported the gifting of cherry trees to Washington DC, which was accepted by Helen Herron Taft, the First Lady of the United States. However, the festival began later in the same year when the First Lady and Viscountess China, wife of the Japanese Ambassador, planted two Yoshino cherry trees on the northern bank of the Tidal Basin.Image credits: X
