Just days before Chardham Yatra 2026, Kedarnath Dham covered in 5 feet snow - Internet reacts to viral videos
Kedarnath Dham stands as a timeless beacon of faith for millions. Situated in the cradle of the sacred Himalayas, it is the most revered religious site for pilgrims.
This sacred Jyotirlinga temple, surrounded by snow-capped peaks, draws pilgrims from across India and beyond for the annual Char Dham Yatra. Every year, as winter bids farewell, the temple gates reopen amid chants and celebrations, marking the start of a spiritual journey that tests devotion and endurance.
But the ongoing erratic weather conditions in early April 2026 have draped the entire valley in a thick blanket of snow. With the temple gates scheduled to open on April 22, workers and caretakers are continuously trying to clear the route, only for it to be covered again by fresh snowfall.
Officials note that construction, cleaning, route repairs, electricity, water, and tent setups have slowed due to the harsh weather.
According to an on ground TOI report, Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee chief Hemant Dwivedi stated, "Our teams are active and we are confident of completing all work before the pilgrimage begins," assuring the yatra stays on schedule despite the rare April snow from a western disturbance.
High-altitude areas, including Kedarnath, face ongoing snow, while lower hills see rain, dropping temperatures well below normal, such as 6.2°C max in Mukteshwar. This unusual April weather, the heaviest rain since 2020, heightens logistical worries for the yatra.
Similarly, a 12.4-km ropeway to Hemkund Sahib from Govindghat is approved at ₹2,730 crore under the DBFOT model.

Recently surfaced viral videos across social media platforms show continuous heavy snowfall blanketing Kedarnath, Badrinath Dham, and the Kedar Valley under 3 to 5 feet of snow, creating a visually striking yet challenging situation for preparations ahead of the April 22, 2026, gate opening. According to ETV Telangana, "Heavy snowfall of 4–5 feet around the temple is posing a significant challenge to preparation efforts," with teams using horses to transport materials since paths remain uncleared.Officials note that construction, cleaning, route repairs, electricity, water, and tent setups have slowed due to the harsh weather.
Weather warnings add pressure
The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for Uttarakhand, predicting thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds up to 40-50 kmph at isolated spots through April 9 and beyond.High-altitude areas, including Kedarnath, face ongoing snow, while lower hills see rain, dropping temperatures well below normal, such as 6.2°C max in Mukteshwar. This unusual April weather, the heaviest rain since 2020, heightens logistical worries for the yatra.
New pathways to pilgrimage sites under consideration
Amid constantly increasing pilgrimage count, Uttarakhand presses on with infrastructure upgrades. A 12.9-km ropeway from Sonprayag to Kedarnath, will cut travel time from 8-9 hours to 36 minutes, handling 18,000 pilgrims daily.Similarly, a 12.4-km ropeway to Hemkund Sahib from Govindghat is approved at ₹2,730 crore under the DBFOT model.
