Passenger pays ₹15,682 instead of ₹156 – auto driver’s reaction leaves him stunned

A LinkedIn post is drawing attention online after the author shared how a routine ride to an early-morning client meeting turned into an unexpected lesson in honesty.

A rushed payment before an important meeting

The author wrote that he was in a hurry to meet an international client at 7 am when he booked an auto and made a digital payment outside the building.

The fare was ₹156.

In the rush, however, he ended up entering ₹15,682 instead.

Without double-checking the screen, the payment went through, and he quickly headed upstairs for his meeting.

“I typed ₹15,682, hit pay, and ran upstairs,” the post reads.

An unexpected encounter outside

After the meeting – which he later described as disappointing – he came back downstairs and found the auto driver still waiting nearby.

The driver, identified as Altaf in the post, approached him and pointed out the mistake. He then immediately returned the entire excess amount.

“He walked over and told me I’d paid him too much, then sent the whole ₹15,682 back. Not the extra. All of it,” the author shared.

A response that stayed with him

The author said he tried to insist that Altaf keep at least the original fare and some compensation for the waiting time.

But the driver reportedly refused.

Instead, he offered a simple line that stayed with the passenger: “It’s the start of the day for both of us, sir.”

A week later, a reminder of that morning

Seven days after the meeting, the client reportedly got back in touch and showed interest in continuing discussions.

For the author, the update immediately brought back the memory of that morning outside the building.

“The moment the news landed, my mind went straight back to that 7 am footpath,” he wrote.

As a gesture of thanks, he later sent Altaf ₹500 – covering the fare and a small token of appreciation for his honesty.

The post ends with a line that has resonated with many online: “Altaf never asked me for a thing.”
