Renowned photographer Rachel Moore recently captured a stunning close-up of a female humpback whale's eye, revealing its striking blue gaze in remarkable detail. The photograph, taken near Tahiti on October 6, 2024, offers a rare glimpse into the whale’s expansive field of vision. Tragically, just two days after the encounter, the young whale, affectionately named "Sweet Girl," was struck and killed by a speeding ship.

Moore, an ocean advocate, hopes that this heartbreaking story will raise awareness and lead to meaningful change, particularly advocating for speed limits for ships in areas frequented by whales during migration seasons.

Ms. Moore, a dedicated ocean advocate, affectionately named the whale "Sweet Girl" and estimated her age to be between three and four years old. "Swimming with these majestic creatures is an honour, and respecting their space is essential. There's no need to chase or force interactions—sometimes, whales choose to interact on their own terms. The eye contact I shared with her was beyond my wildest dreams. It was the most profoundly beautiful experience of my life. I feel privileged that she allowed me to capture the beauty and life in her eyes," Ms. Moore shared on Instagram.

A tragic loss: The untimely death of the young Humpback whale

Tragically, just two days after the encounter, the young whale was struck and killed by a fast-moving ship. Ms. Moore expressed the hope that this heartbreaking story will lead to meaningful changes, particularly advocating for speed limits for ships in areas where whales are frequently found during their migration seasons. "Over the past few weeks, she touched so many lives, and thanks to your support, her story has reached millions. I hope it sparks real change," she added.
