Reese Witherspoon or Ava Phillippe? Fans can't tell who's who in viral holiday photo

Over the weekend, Reese Witherspoon shared a festive Instagram carousel that included a shot of her standing beside her eldest daughter, Ava Phillippe. Dressed in black with a soft metallic sheen, mother and daughter stood side by side, smiling in near-unison. The likeness was striking enough that the photo quickly travelled beyond Reese Witherspoon’s page, sparking instant reactions and repeated double-takes.

Comments poured in. One viewer admitted they initially assumed the image was AI-generated, a digitally blended “then and now” trick. Others focused less on Reese and more on genetics, insisting Ava looks uncannily like her father, Ryan Phillippe. “AVA LOOKS LIKE RYAN,” one commenter wrote. “She pretty much has his whole face.” Another described the resemblance as “uncanny”, while others marvelled at how strongly paternal traits can reappear across generations.



The photo appeared among a wider set of holiday images Witherspoon shared on 21 December, captioned simply, “Making Merry.” The carousel also featured her sons, Deacon Phillippe, 22, and Tennessee James Toth, 13, along with glimpses of Christmas decorations, a gingerbread house, and a rare family moment with her mother, Betty. In one frame, Witherspoon wears a Christmas jumper and denim trousers as she poses beside her mum, surrounded by aeroplanes. Another shows her out shopping with longtime friend and collaborator Laura Dern.

The reaction focused almost entirely on the mother-daughter pairing. Fans described the resemblance as “uncanny,” “wild,” and “honestly confusing,” with several joking that Ava looked like a younger version of Witherspoon rather than her child.
