Restaurant charges ₹10,600 just to cut cake; viral bill sparks outrage online
In today’s social media-driven world, even a small detail on a restaurant bill can become a major talking point. That is exactly what happened in Beverly Hills, where a luxury dining experience turned into an online debate after a cake-cutting charge on a receipt went viral. What looked like a regular dinner bill soon became the center of attention, with users across platforms questioning the extra fee and how such charges are communicated in upscale restaurants.
The discussion began after food influencer @justinelovesushi shared a bill from Poza, a rooftop restaurant located at L’Ermitage Beverly Hills.
The bill included an additional charge of $110 listed as “cake cutting.” This amount was calculated at $10 per person for the group dining at the restaurant.
Since the total bill crossed $1,100, the extra charge stood out and quickly became the main reason the receipt started trending online.
After the post went viral, users on social media shared different reactions. Some felt the charge was too high for a simple service, while others said such fees are common in high-end restaurants when guests bring outside cakes.
One user said, “I don't think she's overreacting, because a hundred and ten dollars just to swipe a knife through a cake. That's crazy.”
Another user commented, “What the actual efff. Please expose this restaurant, so i can take it off my bucket list.”
The comments showed a clear divide in opinion, with strong reactions from both sides.
The viral discussion also received attention from another restaurant, which shared its opinion and highlighted concerns about whether customers are informed before such charges are applied.
The restaurant said, “If you weren't told about the cake fee before they cut it, you need to get your $ back. They should have told you and got your ok before proceeding. A $10/pp cake fee is INSANE!!! Ours is $5/pp and if it's a larger party, we have a cap depending on size of cake and party.”
They further added, “$110 for 11 people is utterly ridiculous!”
Following the online attention, Poza responded publicly and apologized for the situation. The restaurant said the customer should have been informed about the cake-cutting fee before the service was provided.
The restaurant stated, “We are so sorry you were not properly informed of our cake-cutting fee. Please know that is not reflective of our standard, and you should have been notified of the fee once you brought the cake.”
It further added, “As you weren't informed, we'd be happy to refund the fee and invite you and a friend back to Poza to have a proper experience.”
After the incident gained wide attention online, Poza also changed its pricing policy. The restaurant reduced its cake-cutting fee from $10 per person to $5 per person.
