Journey to Agra

Despite assurances from both kingdoms and encouragement for Shivaji to meet Aurangzeb, their true intentions soon became apparent to each other. Upon arriving at the Mughal court, Shivaji was treated with suspicion and was eventually placed under house arrest. Realising the danger he was in, Shivaji began to plan his escape.

Cold reception and offense

However, upon arrival, Shivaji was met with a cold reception at Aurangzeb's court, which greatly offended his sense of authority and self-image. Feeling increasingly humiliated and disrespected, Shivaji endured Aurangzeb's attempts to provoke him, maintaining his composure and even feigning enchantment with the experience.

Deception and escape plan

Shivaji harbored a desire to escape Aurangzeb's treachery. Pretending to fall ill, he deceived Aurangzeb and arranged for his son to take his place in bed while he made his escape. Concealing himself in a fruit basket, Shivaji successfully evaded the heavily guarded premises.

The following day, Aurangzeb was alarmed by Shivaji's disappearance and initiated a frantic search. Seeking to return to his mother in Maharashtra, Shivaji disguised himself as a monk and safely reunited with Jijabai.

During his journey back to Maharashtra, Shivaji encountered loyal allies who were willing to risk their lives to support him. These individuals provided him with shelter, provisions, and crucial information about Aurangzeb's movements, enabling Shivaji to evade capture and continue his quest for freedom.
