ET's original animatronic head used in Steven Spielberg’s film auctioned for a whopping Rs 5.3 crores
Movie buffs recently had an astonishing chance at owning a piece of Hollywood’s history with the original mechanical animatronic E.T. head made especially for Hollywood director Steven Spielberg’s popular film ‘E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial’ which went up for auction. The event was organized recently with Wizards, robots, heroes, and aliens-themed evenings in Beverly Hills. It was a four-day event entitled Hollywood Legends through Julian’s Auctions.
The winning bidder of the evening submitted a whopping $635,000 (roughly Rs 5.3 crores) to get his hands on the popular figure E.T.’s head which was created by legendary special effects artist Carlo Rambaldi. There were 12 bids made by the time the winning bid was offered. Talking about the head which is composed of a metal frame and foam latex outer skin, which can activate the pulsation of veins in some close-up scenes.

Carlo Rambaldi also designed the aliens for Spielberg’s film ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’, and made four heads for the shooting of ‘E.T.’ One of the costumes was the main animatronic, and the others for facial expressions. He also created a full outfit costume for the film. The puppet that controlled E.T. 's face by a team of puppeteers with animatronics was created in three months and cost $1.5 million.
Many people took turns wearing the costume including two little people, Pat Bilon, Tamara De Treaux, and Matthew DeMeritt during the shoot that went from September to December 1981, on a budget of $10.5 million. DeMeritt had to walk on his hands and played all the scenes, where the character was supposed to walk away awkwardly or used to fall over. The head of E.T. was placed above the actors so that they could see through the slits in their chests.

The film is directed by Steven Spielberg, whereas Melissa Mathison gave the film's screenplay. It hit theatres in June 1982 and revolved around the story of a boy named Elliot who befriends an extraterrestrial dubbed E.T. who was left behind on Earth. Along with his friends and family, Elliott had to help E.T. find his way back home.
The film starred Dee Wallace, Henry Thomas, Drew Barrymore, Peter Coyote, Robert MacNaughton, C. Thomas Howell, Sean Frye, and K.C. Martel. By the end of its theatrical release in 1983, the film grossed $359 million in the U.S. and Canada and $619 million worldwide. It was re-released in 1985 and 2022, earning $60 million and $68 million respectively. The film thus earned a total worldwide of over $792 million.
