This country is turning an entire airport into a Pokémon world and fans are already planning tips
Japan clearly knows how to turn literally anything into a tourist attraction, and now it’s doing it with an airport.
In news that feels straight out of a Pokémon fan’s dream, a regional airport in Japan is getting a full-blown Pokémon makeover and will soon become the first airport in the world to officially carry a Pokémon-themed name.
Starting July 7, 2026, Noto Satoyama Airport will reopen as the “Noto Satoyama Pokémon With You Airport,” and honestly, it sounds less like an airport and more like a real-life anime attraction.
The transformation isn’t just about cute decorations or a few Pikachu posters. Japan is going all in. The airport, located in the scenic Noto Peninsula region, will stay in its Pokémon-themed form until September 2029. The idea behind the project is actually pretty emotional too. It’s part of a larger effort to help revive tourism and lift community spirits after the devastating 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake. Local authorities teamed up with the Pokémon With You Foundation to create a space that brings some happiness back - especially for children and families affected by the disaster.
And from the looks of it, they’ve completely committed to the theme. The airport entrance will be packed with giant Pokémon displays, colourful themed pillars, and redesigned signs inspired by the Pokémon universe. Even the official logo now mixes Poké Balls and Pikachu graphics with the shape of the Noto Peninsula.
But the real showstopper? A giant two-storey atrium featuring a massive Pikachu balloon flying an airplane right in the middle of the terminal. Around it, visitors will find Pokémon characters spread across the entire space, making it feel more like entering a theme park than catching a flight. There’s also a more heartfelt side to the makeover.
One section of the airport will feature a large artwork called “A Bright Future,” created as a message of hope and recovery after the earthquake. Another newly designed visual called “Sky of Hope” shows Pokémon soaring through rainbow-filled skies and will appear across the airport, on souvenirs, buses, and special merchandise.
And yes, there’s exclusive Pokémon food too - because of course there is. Visitors heading to Restaurant Annon inside the airport can try Pokémon-themed pancakes and special drinks, with collectible placemats included in combo meals. Meanwhile, the airport shop will sell limited-edition goodies you can only buy there, including themed T-shirts, luggage tags, keychains, suitcase belts, and exclusive “Sky of Hope” merchandise.
Japan is even extending the Pokémon experience beyond the airport itself. From mid-July 2026, specially designed Pokémon buses will start running across the Noto Peninsula, connecting travellers to nearby attractions and sightseeing spots. Some buses will travel between Kanazawa Station, the airport, and Wajima, while other routes are being designed specifically for Pokémon tourism.
The buses are expected to operate mainly during weekends, holidays, and peak travel seasons - which probably means fans are going to be lining up fast. Honestly, only Japan could turn post-earthquake recovery into something this creative, emotional, and wildly fun at the same time. And if social media reactions are anything to go by, Pokémon fans around the world are already adding the Noto Peninsula to their travel bucket lists.
