India and Manganese production

India is one of the world’s leading producers of manganese, an important mineral used in steel manufacturing, batteries, and various industrial applications. Several states contribute significantly to the country’s manganese output, with Odisha leading the charge, followed by Maharashtra and Karnataka. Let’s explore the top manganese-producing states in India and understand their contributions.

2/12

India's increasing Manganese sector

Manganese is a vital element in industrial manufacturing, most notably in the steel industry, for hardening and deoxidizing steel. India's Manganese deposits provide an uninterrupted supply for domestic use as well as for exports. Odisha has consistently been the leading producer, with more than one-third of India's overall manganese production during the past few years. Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Madhya Pradesh are other important states contributing significantly to India's manganese mines.

3/12

Odisha

The largest producer of manganese in India is Odisha, with over 37% of the overall production. It is famous for its high-grade manganese deposits within the mineral-rich districts of Sundargarh, Kendujhar, Koraput, and Kalahandi. Odisha's large deposits and effective mining processes make it the pillar of India's manganese industry.

4/12

Maharashtra

Maharashtra is one of the leading manganese-producing states, accounting for approximately 24% of the country's production. Nagpur, Bhandara, and Ratnagiri districts are the major mining centers with high-grade ore. Maharashtra contributes a major share and is thus a key player in India's steel industry.

5/12

Karnataka

Karnataka is also a prominent producer of manganese, contributing about 13% to the country's production. Bellary, Chitradurga, Tumkur, and Shimoga are districts rich in minerals and are prominent producers of manganese for the state. The state's high-grade ore finds its application mostly in steel production and industrial purposes.

6/12

Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh is responsible for about 11% of India's manganese production. Reserves of the state primarily occur in the Balaghat and Chhindwara districts, which have a geological affinity with Maharashtra's Nagpur-Bhandara belt. Even though it has a relatively smaller percentage, Madhya Pradesh remains a prominent player in the industry.

7/12

Andhra Pradesh

While Andhra Pradesh does have manganese deposits in the Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts, its share is minimal, contributing approximately 4% to India's overall production. The state's manganese is lower in grade but can be treated and upgraded for industrial purposes.

8/12

Goa

Goa's production of manganese is comparatively small compared to top states, but its deposits, primarily in South Goa, continue to contribute to the overall industry.

9/12

Jharkhand

Jharkhand's manganese reserves are largely in the Singhbhum district and contribute roughly 2% of India's overall production. Although not significant, the state is strategically placed because of its rich mineral landscape.

10/12

Rajasthan

The manganese reserves in Rajasthan are limited and lightly mined. The Udaipur district is the major mining area, contributing insignificantly to the nation's production.

11/12

Gujarat

Gujarat has minimal manganese production, with Panchmahals being the only notable district for manganese mining.

12/12

West Bengal

West Bengal produces very little manganese, with Purulia being the key district for mining. Despite its limited output, the state still adds to the national reserves.
