Constipation? 5 doctor-approved delicious drinks that will give you instant relief

Nobody really wants to talk about poop. But let’s be honest – the moment something goes ‘off’, that’s all you can think about. Constipation is one of the most common digestive problems, and millions of people struggle with it. While persistent constipation should always be checked by a doctor, in many cases it can be resolved with simple dietary changes. Dr Joseph Salhab, a board-certified gastroenterologist trained at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, has shared some beverages made with delicious natural ingredients that can give you instant relief. Here are five delicious drinks that can help get things moving naturally.

2/6

Chia fresca

Start your day with a refreshing chia fresca. This beverage is not only delicious but also gives you instant relief. All you need are a few ingredients already in your kitchen. Add one tablespoon of chia seeds to a 12-ounce glass of water. Let it soak for 10–15 minutes. Add some cucumber slices and mint, and finish with a squeeze of lemon to get your gut moving. Dr Salhab says this drink is ‘packed with fibre’ and helps relieve constipation.

3/6

Prune, pear, or apple juice

The second option is simple. You can either have a shot of prune, pear, or apple juice. These juices contain sorbitol, a natural sugar alcohol that works as a gentle laxative. Sorbitol helps soften stools and also stimulates bowel movements. “You can either take them as a shot or just mix them if you don’t like the taste of one or another. Use fresh fruits or juices made without added sugar,” the gastroenterologist suggested in a video shared on Instagram.

4/6

Herbal teas

One of the best ways to empty your bowels in the morning is by sipping warm tea. According to Dr Salhab, herbal teas can help you poop. “Warm water stimulates bowel movements, and you can find teas that contain senna for short-term use and others with peppermint that can help with gas and bloating,” the doctor said.

5/6

Kefir-berry smoothie

Kefir, a fermented milk product rich in probiotics, is known for its gut health benefits and support for digestion. Dr Salhab suggests blending kefir with some berries to relieve a blocked-up feeling. “Add one tablespoon of psyllium, flax seeds, or hemp seeds for a nutrient-dense fibre shake,” the doctor said.

6/6

Caffeinated drinks

Don’t underestimate your morning cup of coffee or green tea. Sip a cup of warm coffee in the morning, and you may feel relief quickly. “Caffeine stimulates the gastrocolic reflex, which can help trigger a bowel movement. Constipation often improves when you consistently increase fibre, hydration, and gut-friendly foods,” the doctor explained.

Along with these, ensure you drink plenty of water throughout the day, which can naturally improve your digestion.
