The Soviet Union was first to send a satellite into space in 1957, the Sputnik I.

The USA followed the Soviets in 1958 to become the second country to send a satellite into space, the Explorer I.

The UK became the third country to send a satellite into space in 1962, Ariel I.

Canada became the fourth nation to send a satellite into space in September 1962, Alouette I.

Italy became the fifth country to send a satellite into space in 1964 with San Marco 1.

​France

France became the sixth nation to send a satellite into space in 1965 with Asterix.

Australia was the seventh country to send a satellite into space in 1967 with WRESAT (Weapons Research Establishment Satellite).
