Google has launched an open AI model called Gemma. The tech giant has confirmed that the new open AI model has been created using the same research and technology that was used to build its Gemini AI models. The company noted that Gemma is its contribution to the open community and is meant to help developers to build “AI responsibly.”

Aside from Gemma, the company has also introduced the Responsible Generative AI Toolkit. This toolkit includes a debugging tool, as well as a guide for the best practices for AI development based on Google's experience.

Google Gemma AI model: Availability

The company added that Gemma is available in two different sizes — Gemma 2B and Gemma 7B. Both models come with pre-trained and instruction-tuned variants . Google also noted that both models are lightweight enough to run directly on a developer's laptop or desktop computer.

Developers who want to start working with the Gemma models can access them through data science platform Kaggle, Google's Colab notebooks or through Google Cloud.

How Gemma is better than other available open AI models

When it comes to key benchmarks, Gemma surpasses much larger models, Google noted. The company also claimed that both model sizes outperform other available open models.

Apart from being powerful, the Gemma models were also trained to be safer. For this, Google has used automated techniques to strip personal information from the data it used to train the models. The company also used reinforcement learning based on human feedback to ensure Gemma's instruction-tuned variants show responsible behaviors.

Both companies and independent developers will be able to use Gemma to create AI-powered apps. This model will be helpful for developers if none of the currently available open models are powerful enough for what they want to build.

Google is also planning to introduce more Gemma variants in the coming days which will be useful for an even more diverse range of apps.
