NEW DELHI: Sharing your Aadhaar card number with anyone and everyone is never a safe thing to do. Therefore, you should be very careful while choosing to use it as an ID proof.
Even if in case you want to share Aadhaar card as an ID proof, you always have the option to not disclose your Aadhaar card number by using a ‘Masked Aadhaar’ or a 16-digit Virtual ID (VID).
In this case, you can download a new e-copy of your Aadhaar card where your real Aadhaar number will be hidden.
What is Masked Aadhaar?Mask Aadhaar option allows users to hide their Aadhaar number in your downloaded e-Aadhaar copy. Masked Aadhaar number will replace the first 8 digits of Aadhaar number with some characters with crosses “xxxx-xxxx” while making the last 4 digits of the Aadhaar number visible.
Why should you use Masked Aadhaar?Masked Aadhaar is valid and accepted widely so you should not get tricked into believing that it is not authentic and acceptable. Using this as an ID proof is far safer than the regular Aadhaar card as it reduces the distribution of your Aadhaar number and therefore the risks of it being misused also shrink.

- Enter your Aadhaar card number
- Tick on ‘I want a masked Aadhaar?’
- Enter Captcha verification
- Click on ‘Send OTP’
- Download your e-Aadhaar copy
