Sentimental Value Movie Review: A gentle look at family that hits harder than expected

Story: After their mother’s death, sisters Nora and Agnes try to reconnect with their estranged father, Gustav. Tensions rise when an American actress joins his new project, forcing the family to face the past.Review: ‘Sentimental Value’ is a quiet, thoughtful film about family and the weight of old wounds. It doesn’t rush or try to grab attention with loud drama, and that’s part of its appeal. The film asks you to sit with the characters, watch how they behave, and feel the tension in their everyday lives. Director Joachim Trier keeps the story simple but full of emotion, showing that family relationships are rarely neat or easy. Even the way the characters linger in the room or avoid eye contact shows the tension and history between the family members. At first, you might think not much is happening, but slowly, you realize you’ve been pulled into the lives of these people. By the end, it feels less like watching a film and more like witnessing life itself. The plot revolves around two sisters, Nora (Renate Reinsve) and Agnes (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas), and their estranged father, Gustav (Stellan Skarsgård). After their mother dies, Gustav returns, hoping to reconnect, though old tensions make this complicated. Nora is a stage actor who has spent years avoiding emotional closeness, while Agnes, a history researcher, quietly juggles caring for her young son and managing her own regrets. Gustav, a once-famous filmmaker, hopes to mend the past by involving his daughters in his new project, also his final film. When an American actress, Rachel (Elle Fanning), takes a role that Nora refuses, old tensions resurface and new ones begin to simmer. The film shows how each family member sees things differently and how attempts at reconciliation are often messy. The tone and pacing of the film are gentle. There aren’t dramatic outbursts or sudden climaxes. It’s the kind of story where healing doesn’t happen in a single conversation and it’s slow, awkward, and sometimes frustrating too. And you can’t help but feel that in real life, it would probably be the same. Some viewers may find this a slow film, but that’s the point. It feels authentic, like watching real people navigate life rather than actors reading a script. And yet, there are touches of warmth and even humour that sneak in at unexpected moments, reminding you that families are messy but not always heavy. Over time, you begin to care about the characters, even when they act stubborn or frustratingly human. The performances in the film are consistently impressive, and all of the actors are fantastic. Renate Reinsve as Nora is quietly powerful, showing strength but also moments of deep vulnerability. Stellan Skarsgård as Gustav is both charming and irritating and is someone who clearly loves his daughters but struggles to show it in ways they can understand. Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas as Agnes is steady and understated, carrying much of the emotional weight without ever feeling showy. Elle Fanning’s Rachel brings an outsider’s perspective, challenging the family to look at themselves in ways they might prefer to avoid. What makes these performances feel alive is the attention to small details, and you see subtle shifts in their emotions as the story goes on, and that makes the characters feel real rather than just written. ‘Sentimental Value’ is a film that asks for patience and, in the end, gives a lasting reward. It isn’t flashy, and it doesn’t tie everything up neatly, but it is honest and full of human truth. The film shows how people try to connect, make amends, and understand one another, even when communication fails. For viewers who appreciate thoughtful, realistic storytelling, it is a film that leaves an impression. It reminds you that love is complicated, family is messy, and healing takes time, but that doesn’t make the attempt any less meaningful. This film is a must-watch.
