For international students, the US has remained the world’s most popular option for studying abroad as a large number of the world’s top ranking universities are housed in the country. Many students seek American colleges as a much more reliable option to study abroad and aim for well-known colleges, especially when it comes to Business, Engineering and Management education.

However, there is much more to explore, when it comes to studying in the US and thus, the need to look beyond the traditional, says Ramya Varahigari, an alumnus of the University of New Mexico (UNM).

"New Mexico is a fairly unknown study destination for Indian students, compared to the more popular cities. But, the universities here are at par with any other good education institute in the US. My experience at UNM was quite enriching as I worked on real-time projects funded by the government and industries," says Ramya, who pursued MS in Embedded Systems at UNM.

She recommends Indian students to explore universities in New Mexico as there are more chances for them to get scholarships or find employment to support themselves while studying here. "Since it is not a traditional destination, the chances of getting scholarships are more. UNM offers Amigo Scholarship, where all the qualifying international students are eligible for a non-resident tuition waiver, which means the student only pays the in-state tuition fee," says Ramya.

A native of Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, the 25-yearold is now employed with Comcast as an embedded engineer in the US. "In New Mexico, the internship and job opportunities are more for Computer Science graduates compared to other disciplines. The campus hosts students from diverse cultures and is exceptionally inclusive. The biggest challenge is to get accustomed to the harsh cold," says Ramya.
