GUWAHATI: When the district election officer paid her a courtesy visit on the second day of Bohag Bihu on Sunday, 105-year-old "aaita" (grandmother) Ramati Baishya of Dalibari village in Assam's Kamrup promised that she would "definitely" cast her vote and also appeal to others to exercise their democratic right.

Kamrup district commissioner and election officer Keerthi Jalli offered a 'gamosa' and a 'cheleng' (a piece of traditional Assamese cloth) as 'Bihuwan' to the centenarian at her house.

Jalli, who visited the village as part of Systematic Voters' Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme, said, "It was great visiting 'aaita'. If someone like her can go and vote, why can't our young voters go out in large numbers on the poll day to make it a grand success?"

Baishya was happy that she would be taking part in the democratic process at this age. She also advised everyone to cast their votes wisely as people get the opportunity only once in five years to elect their representatives.

There are 171 voters aged 100-plus and 4,630 voters of 85-99 age group in the district. The administration will begin home voting for 85+ voters from April 27, a day after the second phase of polling.
